How to Write an Essay
As a part of high school English, it is increasingly becoming more and more important to know how to write formally. Also, unsurprisingly, more and more students find this hard. This article will teach you the trick and ways of writing an essay.
Things to do before you start
· Write down the key words from the information provided.
· Brainstorm the headings; write down any idea that comes in your brain.
· Pick three of the brainstormed ideas, the one which are most relevant to the key words.
Headings
The heading plays a vital role in all forms of argumentative writing. The more creative and mysterious your heading is, the more interested your reader will. Be careful not to get too creative and write a heading which is totally irrelevant.
Introduction
The introduction should be the opening paragraph to the topic explaining which side of the topic you are on, why you are on it and why it is the better side using T.E.E.L. which is explained in the next paragraph.
Paragraphs
The simplest way to write a paragraph is using T.E.E.L., it is also one of the most effective ways. T.E.E.L. stands for topic sentence, evidence, explanation and link. In a paragraph it is not necessary to write to write an essay in order of topic sentence, explanation, evidence and link; it can be written as T.E.L.E. or T.L.E.E. and all the other combinations.
Topic Sentence
The topic sentence is ideally the first sentence in the paragraph. It should state what the paragraph is about in a strong and final way.
Evidence
In any argumentative piece it is important to give evidence. This can be done by recalling past incidents which make your side of the argument stronger, which is the best option, or by giving a theory based on logic.
Explanation
In the explanation, you should explain what your evidence means. For an example your evidence is that junk food is unhealthy because it contains high amounts of sugar, then your explanation should tell the reader why high amounts of sugar is bad.
Link
The link is ideally the last sentence which introduces the next paragraph.
Rebuttal
The rebuttal is a paragraph which explains the other side’s point of view and then gives evidence and explanation on why it is wrong.
Conclusion
For the conclusion to be most effective, it should be written as one sentence telling the reader why your point of view is right or why they should do as you want.
