Language Retardation on Children

Language retardation is language dysfunction for children. Children who should have been able to speak and express their feeling verbally do not have the competence at the age. Parents and educators have to pay more attention to solve the problems.

Language retardation on children

               Language competence is very important for children. Children with language disability or language retardation will have problems with their intelligence development. Language retardation is a situation on which children show communication disorders. The disorders can be in the morphology, syntaxes, or phonology.  There are two major types of language retardation. Both types are categorized into psychological, biological problems and linguistic problems.

               Biological problems have correlation with disability of language articulation and acquisition organs. Symptoms of this retardation can be recognized. They represent weakness and disable organs. Here are the matters.

  1. Children have problems with hearing organs. They will not receive enough and correct data and information through their hearing. In fact, verbal stimulation is source of language acquisition for the brain.
  2. Children have problems with short term memory. They can not remember that they have just heard. The problems exist because there are some troubles in the brain.
  3. Children have problems with articulation organs. They can be mute or difficult to say words.

               There are more problems that cause language retardation due to biological organs. The biggest disorders are hearing organs, brain and articulation organs. Those three biological matters need special treatment. Parents have to make consultation to a doctor when they detect those language retardation characteristics. The levels of biological disorders also vary. Children who suffer low level of disorder are easy to be treated but when this disorder is ignored, the language retardation can be hard.   

               The last factor of language retardation is linguistic problems. There are some disorders in the acquisition process. Biologically, children with linguistic problems are normal but they have abnormal language behavior. These problems are caused by broken system of language acquisition device ( LAD) in the brain. The system is difficult to identify because the brain looks normal. We can only recognize the symptoms. The symptoms are;

  1. Developmental Dysarthrial is a problem in articulation
  2. Developmental dyspraxia is a weakness to control articulation. The problem can take place in tongue, lips, voice membrane and others.  
  3. Developmental dysphasia is a problem in syntaxes and morphology.
  4. Dysrhithmia is repetitive utterance.
  5. Dysphonia is a problem with weakness of voice membrane movement.

               These are factors that cause language retardation. This abnormal condition affects intelligence development. Language is a mean of communication both oral and written. Language dysfunction will influence children competence in reading or understanding written texts and speeches. Children will face another problem if parents and educators do not take actions to give special treatment to the children. The next crisis that children will have is reading disability or reading backwardness.
