Lord Pacal became king of the Mayan city – state of Palenque in A.D. 615, when he was only 12 years old. Pacal’s name means “shield”.
As king, it was his duty to be strong and warlike and to protect his people from attack. Pacal reigned for an astonishing 68 years and made the city of Palenque rich and powerful.
He built a magnificent temple, in which he was buried. Its walls were decorated with carvings of his ancestors – like all Mayan rulers, Pacal believed he was descended from the gods.
Each Mayan ruler was chosen at an important religious ceremony, often when he or she was still a young child. Prisoners of war were led in front of the chosen king or queen and were sacrificed one by one. As the blood of the captives was sprinkled around, the Mayans asked the gods to bless their future ruler.

An odd practice during that time. I can’t imagine people being sacrificed for the good fortune of the king.
