Media’s Effect in Youth

Good and bad.

media violence, Introduction

Media is playing a very important role in the lives of the youth. It’s almost like if it was quickly becoming their main source of moral education and important information.

Media classification

TV:

Television is definitely one of their main sources of information and entertainment. This means they trust what they see in television and hardly question it. Kids nowadays spend a lot of their free time watching television. Sometimes they spend the whole day watching T.V! This is very wrong. T.V often shows violence like a natural thing and kids believe it. Most T.V shows are now based in: alcohol, drugs, sex and violence. And kids are exposed to this everyday. This often makes them violent or they believe everything they see there is good and try to do the same.

Internet:

Internet is becoming the most important way of communication by far. It’s used by adults and by kids. It’s uses varies a lot. It can be used to find jobs, to offer jobs, to chat with friends/associates/clients, to find information, to play on-line/ games, to do about everything you want to do. Kinds who are not T.V. addicts are most of the time computer addicts (sadly). This means they spend most of their time browsing the Internet or playing on the computer, etc. It also means they trust it very much and will doubt about what the learn there only if it says it’s false or if they have experience with specific subjects. Internet has many angers for kids. Examples:

  • Pedophiles
  • Adult material
  • False information
  • Violence

These are all shown in the most natural way and accessible for kids and adults. “I’m older than 18″ banners aren’t working. They are still exposed to these things and grow believing it’s all good.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones have become a very important tool for kids. They practically forgot how to use a regular phone because they… well… they don’t really need to remember. They an text or call from their mobiles now. Mobile phones aren’t as bad for kids as the examples above but they are still not right. They steal family lives of these children. They no longer share family moments or talk with their parents when they need advice. They call or text a friend and it’s all done!

Conclusion

I’m not saying kids shouldn’t be aloud to watch TV, use the Internet or have mobile phones. I’m just saying it should all be controlled  and they have supervision. Use parental blocks on the TV, family filters on the Internet and make them spend family time. I hope this helped.
