Whether you believe in the predictions made by the ancient Mayans and the Long Count of their calendar, where the world will end on 21 December 2012, or not, there is no denying that it has been a great source of disaster material for many authors and film makers alike.

The release of the movie “2012″ was delayed from the summer of 2009 until November, and to be honest it got mixed reviews. The major difference with this movie has over many of the other disasters which have been dished out by Hollywood over the years is that this one ‘might come true’. Nobody really knows whether the predictions of the ancient Mayans will actually come true, and nobody will until 22 December 2012, but it hasn’t stopped Hollywood from putting their inimitable interpretation onto the potential disaster which awaits us all. Many other movies have already used the impending doom of 2012 as a theme, remember the Will Smith movie ‘I am Legend’ which was set in 2012 also, as have many other stories.

Many books have been written with the theme or settings in 2012, with novels incorporating possible disasters and of course the inevitable list of ‘survival guides’ to help you prepare for and survive any such event.

There is also an innovative range of products which are being marketed as 2012 survival supplies. These include books and handbooks on emergency food storage, medical kits, crank powered radios and solar cookers on specially designed websites aimed at helping you to survive the inevitable end of the world. There are deals of dried and canned foods, and of course water containers. One of the most important supplies you will need in case of an emergency is clean drinking water. You can buy a fully equipped survival kit, for as many people as you need, which is said to keep you alive for the first 72 hours, and these are proving to be remarkably popular. As you can imagine, generators are also high on the list of survival equipment which you would need in the event of a major world disaster.

No matter how often we try to tell ourselves that we don’t believe in these prophecies, and that the Mayan calendar has been misinterpreted, there is still always that ‘what if’ at the back of our minds. Some people are definitely going to a lot of trouble to prepare themselves for such a disaster, ‘what if’ they are the sensible ones.

The Mayan people were not prophets, but they were avid sky watchers and in many ways were on a par with the Egyptians and the Greeks. They predicted the total solar eclipse of 1999 on their Mayan Calendar and that came true, so we’d better not dismiss them too easily. Be prepared for an eventful 21 December 2012.
