Social Work and Its Many Facets

Social work and its many facets.

sosial work in layman’s terms means organized and planned work aimed at improving and restoring the social conditions of a community or a person. There are many aspects to social work and they are segregated on the basis of the various social problemsone could be facing or going through. The aim of social work is to help the people who are suffering in various ways to adjust and be a part of the social environment in which they should be. They are various social problems people could be facing, right from child abuse to lack of care towards senior citizens. In this article we shall talk about such various social problems and how only courageous acts initiated by social workers can help get victims facing such social problems, back on track.

One of the major types of social work involves family and school social work. This basically includes helping children deal with problems such as their parents getting divorced or being in any kind of a broken home, as these things cause permanent damage to a child unless something is done about it. This area of social work extends to more bizarre things such as child abuse and mistreatment in foster homes for children. In India child abuse in not unheard of, considering the amount of poverty in our country there are always cases about child abuse and child labour. The only way to save such children from being scarred for life is throughacts of social courage. There are several NGO’s which are dedicated to protecting the rights of children, the most popular one being CRY (child rights and you). Another aspect of social work covers helping people who have certain mental problems due to experiences they have endured in the course of their lives. These mental problems cause them to turn towards substance abuse as an outlet for their sadness. Social workers help get the person out of their drug abuse problem before it’s to late. They also help the families of these people and educate them on how to cope with such problems. These sessions are normally done in groups so that the person does not feel like he is the only one with such a problem. Such social workers normally work in hospitals or clinics. Another major social problem we are faced with is that of sex workers. No woman wants to be a sex worker; it’s always the circumstances and the situation which lead them to do so. And the major problem with sex workers is of HIV AIDS, which is bound to happen considering the nature of their job. There are numerous NGO’s which are solely dedicated to protecting the rights of women. These NGO’s try and give such women a better option of livelihood which would make them refrain from being a sex worker.

These are just some of the broader aspects of social work, social work is very important for the improvement of society, as anything which involves improving peoples lives is considered to be social work. Society achievements can only be made with the help of socialwork as it the sole way to improving society.
