Urban Design
Urban design relates to the arrangement and planning of urban places like cities and towns from the view point of design or architecture by creating interesting places like city center, city square, plazas, etc, or open places like parks and playgrounds, or landmarks like the buildings, bridges, natural scapes, landscapes and other. There are various fields related to it varying from Urban conservation, Urban planning, Urban landscape, Urban renewal, Urban regeneration and Urban Place making.
After the establishment of the industrial revolution and the increase in productivity, the business men gained more power and thus changed the course of construction methodology. Buildings and cities were to be made fast to perform to the challenging needs.
Due to the invent of the steam engine, the English gained power over the world and the railroads were born. And continued to this date the course of action of the modern Urban Design was born. ’Urban design’ was first used as a distinctive term when Harvard University hosted a series of Urban Design Conferences from 1956 . These conferences provided a platform for the launching of Harvard’s Urban Design program in 1959-60. The writings of Jane Jacobs, Kevin Lynch, Gordon Cullen and Christopher Alexander became authoritative works for the school of Urban Design.
