1000 Dollar Begging

Beggars and begging on streets are common in India. Even knocking your door for asking a rupee or two is not unfamiliar to me here. But, demanding for a 50,000 rupees begging was something new for me.

1000 Dollar Begging

As most of us know beggars are common on earth and at times we have to be generous in helping our brothers alive. I know there are genuine reasons for someone to plead your help, and ask for your support. This may not be the case always; especially the situation that I faced recently in India was horrible.

This happened to me when I was staying with my new born baby and my wife at her mom’s home. We were there for a few days stay allowing my in-law parents to have some happy moments with the baby and of course with their daughter. We were happy for the first few days and then came the day of happening. I was taking breakfast and my wife and her mom was playing with the little baby on her grandma’s bed. The food was tasty that I was almost involved in the process of enjoying it, and then there was a knock on the door. I continued feasting on the special Daal Puri and Potato Kuruma while my wife opened the front room door for the visitors.

I heard a loud voice outside, from the living room, and my mother-in-law informed me to take the baby and rush upstairs. I was not sure what was going on, and just obeyed what she has instructed. But curiosity pulled me down a few steps and peep through the stair space to see five to six ladies bargaining with my wife; no they were gents; actually they were neither ladies nor gents; they were a team of eunuchs. I could see through the little space that they were almost attacking on my wife with abuses and dirty gestures. My mother-in-law saw that I am peeping with baby on my hip. She instructed me to be in the room once again and I strictly obeyed her words.

The remaining story I heard from my wife later, on that day. They demanded a donation of 50,000 Indian Rupees from her, which is more than One Thousand and One Hundred US Dollars. Donation was not for any creative action or any developmental idea; it was for their celebration. They wanted to celebrate with our money for us becoming parents. Most interestingly, neither my wife nor her parents ever met them before. And again, they are not just a normal group of beggars who will be satisfied with a one rupee coin or even a hundred rupee note; they are God’s special representatives who have the right to curse and obviously the right to bless.

My wife, who was not interested to lose a thousand dollar from our cash balance, attempted a bargain only to get some more abuses, and some more insults. A full hour performance took away our 30,000 Indian Rupees and peace of mind. Later when discussed with her friends about this matter, I was surprised to know that police, and even some of the neighbors are also involved in the drama by taking a percentage of commission in their own pockets. We being just visitors to the state if slaughtered to take 30,000 Rupees, how much the locals must be paying? Anyway, I believe this can be a good family planning device for the government to spread through the nation.

What a terrible situation and someone was begging for money and only because they thought you were weak and would give in! So wrong…
