A Brief Time Line of Major Events in Swedish History

A brief timeline of Swedish history from 1397 to present day.

1397:Union of kalmar unites Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Erik of Pomerania becomes regent.

1434:Swedish peasants and miners rebel against Erik.

1439:Erik was deposed and replaced by his nephew Christopher.

1448:Karl Knuttson is chosen as king and Sweden separates from Denmark and Norway.

1517:A power struggle between regent Sture the Younger and the archbishop of Uppsala broke into civil war.

1520:Denmark intervened and Sture was killed, but his widow continued the fight. On 4 November Christian II was crowned. Trolle tried them for heresy on the grounds they ignored the authority of the church. 82 people were executed in the bloodbath of Stockholm.

1521:Swedes led by Gustavus Vasa rebel.

1523:Gustavus becomes king of Sweden.

1536:Gustavus allows the church to adopt certain Lutheran practices such as marriage of the clergy.

1560:Gustavus dies and is replaced by Eric XIV.

1561:Sweden take Tallinn and part of Estonia.

1563:Eric’s brother John leads a rebellion.

1569:John becomes King John III.

1587:John’s son Sigismund gets elected king of Poland.

1592:Sigismund becomes King of Sweden.

1599:Sigismund is desposed.

1604:Duke Charles becomes King Charles IX

1613:Gustavus II Adolphus becomes King of Sweden.

1629:Sweden gains Riga and part of Latvia from Poland.

1630:Sweden intervenes in the Thirty Years War.

1631:Gustavus wins a great victory at Breitenfelt.

1632:Gustavus is killed in the battle of Lutzen.

1648:Thirty Years War ends.

1655:King Charles X Gustavus invades Poland and conquers most of their country.

1697:Charles XII becomes King of Sweden.

1700:Denmark, Poland, and Russia attack Sweden in what becomes known as the Great Northern War. Charles XII leads an army to Zealand in Denmark. As a result Denmark quickly capitulated. Afterwards the Swedes crushed the Russians at the battle of Narva in Estonia.

1709:Charles attacks the Russians at Poltava and was routed.

1710:Russians capture Tallinn, Riga, Viipuri from the Swedes.

1720:Sweden makes peace with Denmark.

1721:By the Treaty of Nystad, Sweden was force to give up the Baltic Provinces and part of Finland to Russia.

1808:Russia invades Finland and quickly overruns it.

1809:Peace is made with Russia and Finland is lost forever.

1812:Charles John forms an alliance with Russia against Napoleon.

1813:Sweden joins the war against Napoleon.

1814:Denmark surrenders Norway to Sweden.

1842:Universal primary education is introduced in Sweden.

1856:The first railway in Sweden is built.

1905:Norway becomes independent from Sweden.

1921:Universal Suffarage was introduced.

1986:The Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme is assassinated.

1995:Sweden joins the EU.
