A Short Brief on Organizational Communication

Why communication takes place in an organization? What are the methods? What are the styles of communication? How much we can remember from communications?

Communication in any organization is always interactive. Each person while communicating sends and receives concurrently. Communication is a vital job for a manager. In organizations, communication takes place for numerous reasons.  Here people communicate for some particular objectives or to fulfill the following needs.

1.    To feel respected and honored

2.    For information, either to get or to provide

3.    To be felt understood and respected

4.    To cause and create change of action in organization

5.    To create stimulation and reduce monotony

6.    To get rid of unpleasant situation

The methods used for communication are

1.    Listening

2.    Speaking

3.    Reading and

4.    Writing

There are some communication styles also. These are

1.    Passive style

2.    Aggressive style

3.    Passive- aggressive style

4.    Assertive style

Out of all four styles of communication, the assertive style is considered to be the best mode. I have narrated this in my article Assertive Communication is Best for Communication.

Every communication keeps a follow up in our memory. Generally we can remember the issues of communication. But there is some grading of remembering. Basically these things epend on the very method(s) of communication. The general scales of remembering are

1.    By reading – 10%

2.    By hearing – 20%

3.    By seeing – 30%

4.    By hearing and seeing – 50%

5.    By saying and writing – 70%

6.    By saying and doing something on that – 90%

This ratio may vary person to person. It is a general finding about remembering. Communication is no doubt the most important thing in our life. Though I narrated a basic picture of organizational communication here, it bears the same rather more importance in our personal and family life also.
