Advertising in America

The Influence on society and what it’s doing to us.

Advertising today has gone way to far, it started innocent enough but it’s Influence on society today most people underestimate. I don’t know what if anything can be done to control it. I remember the early days of television a commercial would consist of one man with a vegamatic standing at a table he would chop an onion and say buy this, a minute later he was gone. We have come a long way from that. today they advertise percription drugs, ask your doctor if so and so is right for you, maybe you should also ask if has a degree in chemistry, your doctor only knows what the drug company tells him, hes not responsible, the drug company is, he hand you a free sample and says take this, it’s all part of an advertising campaign, we are becoming lab rats for drug companies, the fact that you seen it advertised on television does not mean it’s safe or good for you.

The next time your at the food store walk down the drug and cosmetic isle and look at the products available, you have to wonder who dreams up this stuff, I think what happens in the research and development labs is the product is discovered first then they try and figure out whats it’s good for and how to market it. An example is mouth wash, have you ever read the warning on it, if you swallow it seek medical help and contact a poison control center right away, brush your teeth everyday and visit your dentist once a year and you won’t have bad breath, advertisers made us self conscious about our breath in order to sell mouth wash, breath mints, gum all junk we don’t need. Deodorant is another, take a shower everyday and watch your diet and you don’t need it, would we even be aware of these things if not for advertising ads. The other thing is this obsession with looking younger, what ever happened to growing old gracefully you might ask, well I’ll tell you, there’s not money in it. Today ninety percent of the ads we see are aimed at people from eighteen to rarely over forty, but I believe that everyone who sees the ad is effected it to some degree, they are shown over and over day after day the image we see becomes who we want to be. We are made to feel self conscious of our weight, made aware of the lines on our face, our hair turning gray, all things that naturally happen to all of us as we age. we are out of shape, compared to who, what standard are judging are self by, some advertisers image he created to sell a home gym, a twenty year old model with perfect skin. I think we all spend to much time and money on this nonsense.
