Aftermath of Latest Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

Quick update on the situation of the latest earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Like many New Zealanders I am sitting stunned, watching the news coverage of the latest earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. For those who have already sent messages, thank you. My husband and I are in the North Island and are a long way from this latest disaster.

Although this latest quake is of a lower magnitude than last years one, the damage is far more extensive. Also, this quake happened during the day, so the centre of the city was filled with people. Children were at school throughout the city, and people are in a  dazed state, wondering where and how their loved ones are. Fatalities were avoided last time, but this time reports of deaths are already coming in.

Since last September there have been constant after shocks, leaving the people in fear of something like today’s event happening. Already traumatised by the events of the last four months, this will have broken the spirit of the people of Christchurch completely.

The quake today hit in the middle of the lunch hour causing extensive damage on top of what had already happened. Christchurch is one of the four original English settlements in New Zealand. Many beautiful historic buildings are now either gone or will have to be demolished.

This will be a short report for now. I’ve written it because many people have already read the article of last years quake, so obviously the news is in the world arena. Like the Australians who have recently had to cope with so many disasters, New Zealanders are strong. The way ahead for many will look grim at the moment, but the people of Christchurch will cope. Please keep them in your hearts.

I just saw the news a few minutes ago. I was just about to send you a PM then I saw that you have this article so I breathed a sigh or relief. You are okay and that’s good to know. My prayers for those who were devastated by the quake.

I have not listened to national news today, which is rare for me to miss. I am glad you and your family are okay. I will pray for the ones in the path of the earthquake. I guess we all have something to worry about whereever we live. In Florida it’s hurricanes.

I heard about the earthquake when I was watching the news earlier. I literally thought “Oh my god, I hope Val and her husband are okay!” I was shocked. I am glad you and your husband are okay though.

That’s tragic news Val. I do have a relative staying somewhere there. I hope she and her family are alright. I’m glad you are safe and sound in the North.

I’m from one of the earthquake states, sharing the Pacific Ring of Fire where New Zealand is in. I’ve been in some quakes. The fury of Mother Nature is frightening. Most likely the stronger quake in Sept weakened many buildings in Christchurch. You and your husband are fortunate to be up north.

So far I have felt the shaking few times when Indonesia had earthquakes, the feeling is really very very terrible.
I am glad you and your family are safe. Take care Val.

I just saw a video of that terrible quake in the news. Many people trapped in the rubble. Some were cowering in fear and the others were running for safety. I’m glad you’re safe.

I heard about this as I was on my way out the door this morning and was shocked to hear that there were casualties. Earthquakes are just not something that I associate with New Zealand, but it is sad to hear of them anywhere, especially when there is loss of life.

Thank you for the update. I am glad to hear that you are out of harm’s way, but sad for those who weren’t. New Zealanders will be in our prayers.

Yes, we shall keep the Christchurch people in our prayers and in our hearts. Keep safe, and may you not tire in comforting those who were directly affected by this phenomenon.

Christchurch is in my prayers. I am so sorry they are going thru this. I am happy that you weren’t close to there, but I know it still hurts your heart to see the damage to people and the city itself. God Bless you.
