Alcantra From Sao Goncalo
Alcantara is a district of São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.
It name objective is to honor the Emperor Dom Pedro de Alcantara. The big ones are always lucky enough to have their own names given to big cities.
The neighborhood came after a train station and developed at the intersection of state highway that connects the capital with the north of the state, with the former route of the Main Road that was the old link farms in the far west of the city. Communications are the best way to make any city wealth soar.
It is considered the biggest business hub, shopping and services in the municipality. There are banks, supermarkets, appliance stores, furniture stores, malls, clinics, hospitals, schools among many other commercial buildings. The Rua João Caetano, better known as Street Fair, has a very strong trade in textiles. There are also established in the neighborhood temples of various faiths, with emphasis on the Church of St. Peter of Alcantara Roman Catholic Church, which has a weekly circulation of about 5 000 faithful citizens, is present in the neighborhood. Another prominent temple is the imposing temple of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, built around 2000.
Since the 60’s that is was seriously thinking on the transformation of the neighborhood in the city. With the coming of the Years of Lead the claim disappears, re-emerging only after the period of democratization of the country. In 1984, local politicians and the newspaper The Alcantara mobilized to conduct a plebiscite, which has handled the ALERJ and was achieved somewhere in 1995. However the election was not successful because, despite a strong vote in favor of emancipation, the overwhelming proportion of voters in the region concerned did not attend the polls, too bad. The new council, which also would be called San Pedro de Alcantara, would consist of some neighborhoods of 1 and all of 2nd and 3rd districts.
Let’s see if it works this time.
