America and Her Conservative Ways

I have written sort of an essay for myself. It is about America’s acceptance of gay rights, or rather, it’s non-acceptance. I have included my personal views on the matter.

Do you think that America is too judgmental when it comes to homosexual relations?

As a matter of fact, other countries have been very open to homosexuality, such as Canada, New Zealand, Austrailia, and also Denmark.  These countries are more accepting of Gays and Lesbians than the United States.

Of coarse, America is now progressing in the acceptance of homosexuality, but in the past it has been a long battle among the public.

Same-sex marriage is a big issue in the U.S.  Republicans and religion-based communities are most likely to be oppossed to the thought of the allowance of same-sex marriage.  Though this is true, the Democratic party has also had a low rate of agreement with this.  It is obvious that America’s conservative habbits are major factors in the non-acceptance of homosexuals within the country.

Still, the public is surprisingly equally divided over the principles of gay and lesbian relations.  About 50% of Americans believe that homosexuals should be accepted among the community, while the other 50% strongly believe that it is all just wrong.

Three states have banned same-sex marriage and four states have legalized the practice in the past year.  This shows that the battle between states on the matter of same-sex marriage is long from over.  In Massachusettss, Connecticutt, and Iowa, same-sex marriage is legal and currently performed.  In Vermontt, same-sex marriages will begin on September 1, 2009.

Below is a map of the laws regarding same-sex partnerships in the United States.

Same-sex marriage      Unions granting rights similar to marriage      Legislation granting limited/enumerated rights      Same-sex marriages performed elsewhere recognized      No specific prohibition or recognition of same-sex marriages or unions      Statute bans same-sex marriage      Constitution bans same-sex marriage      Constitution bans same-sex marriage and some or all other kinds of same-sex unions     As you can see from the map above, the United States does not highly approve of same-sex relations or marriage.  Very few states have legalized same-sex marriage.          What do you think is the reason for this non-acceptance of homosexuality.  Is it the conservative ways of our country?  Is it specifically based on our country’s beliefs?     Hopefully we will witness a spark of equal rights in the near, if not far, future.
