America: The Allure of Possibility

What does America mean to you? America means possibility to me. The allure of possibility is what the foundation of our country was built on and the promise that it continues to hold.

America: The Allure of Possibility

America, above all else, means possibility to me. Freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness ultimately equate to possibility. America gives all her citizens the hope of a better life because so many opportunities are available to us. The value and role of education in the creation and continued prosperity of a free and flourishing America cannot be underestimated.

The American Dream

The American Dream is still one of the most powerful archetypes of our modern age. Whatever an individual’s political leanings may be, the election of Barack Obama as the first African American president is one of the ultimate realizations of possibility in America. Obama remarked that “Americans . . . still believe in an America where anything’s possible—they just don’t think their leaders do.” I do believe this discouragement in America’s leaders, however, is being challenged and that the vision of possibility is recovering its latent power to reinvigorate our nation. Obama was elected president less than 150 years after the end of the Civil War and less than 50 years after the Civil Rights Movement. The power of the American Dream is still strongly pulsating in the American collective spirit.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that “the arch of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” This statement nicely sums up the promise that America offers. Though Americans have experienced many eras of struggle in which not all Americans were allowed to partake of the fruits of possibility, the passage of time has shown that the history of our country has continually arched towards justice, even when it seemed most unlikely. The struggles and triumphs of African Americans, women, and minority groups to gain equal rights and access to the possibilities our country has to offer renew my faith in Dr. King’s assessment.

Sense of History

A sense of history is the foundation of America. Continued teaching of and learning from the lessons of history are critical to shore up American principles, values, and ideals. America was founded on the promise of freedom. America was to be ruled by the people, a plan that set America apart from the countries of the Old World from which the first immigrants came. Immigrants to the New World struggled to establish a country in which they would be free to create the government and live the lives they wanted. We are the heirs of this bold, unique experiment, which is unparalleled in history.

Importance of Education

Education is the most powerful insurance we have to transmit a knowledge of and reverence for America and her history to subsequent generations. We, as Americans, are fortunate because we live in a country that is free, with a government that is strong and stable and run by the people, and a country in which the great hope of possibility is made available to all Americans, regardless of gender or race, through education.
