Final Draft-Interview with Ken Luu

Today there will be an interview with a Vietnamese student regarding what Vietnamese society does with its spare time based on the perspective of a young, adult, Vietnamese male. The interviewer will be from an American cultured background and the interviewee will be from a Vietnamese cultured background. The interviewer is a Hillsborough Community College student by the name of John M. Robles. John is a twenty nine year old Puerto Rican student originally from Bridgeport, Connecticut. The interviewee is a Hillsborough Community College student by the name of Ken Luu. Ken is a twenty five year old Vietnamese student from Saigon, Vietnam. The American and Vietnamese cultures are far more similar than most people think; in the areas of Entertainment, Arts, and Sports.

According to Ken, Saigon, Vietnam is a beautiful place. The word Saigon is a word more commonly used for the city of Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam.com, Ho Chi Minh City, first paragraph). Saigon also uses the abbreviation of HCMC (Vietnam.com, Ho Chi Minh City, first paragraph). Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam with a population of 10 million people (Vietnam.com, Getting to Know Ho Chi Minh City, people, first paragraph). The city of Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) is situated by the Saigon River in the centre of the Cuu Long delta and the Southeastern part of South Vietnam(Vietnamembassy-usa.org, Geography and Climate, bottom of page). The city is located 1725 km south of Hanoi and 50 km west of the Eastern Sea. Ho Chi Minh City has 12 km of coastline (Vietnamembassy-usa.org, Geography and Climate, bottom of page).

Saigon has a very muggy, tropical climate with an average 75% humidity and also is just 63 feet above sea level(Vietnam.com, Getting to Know Ho Chi Minh City, Geography and Climate, second paragraph). Rainy seasons are usually from May to late November, December through April is the driest and the coolest months(Vietnam.com, Getting to Know Ho Chi Minh City, Geography and Climate, second paragraph). Most of the residents of the Vietnamese city of Saigon are Buddhist or practice ancestor worship, but about 13% are Roman Catholic or Protestant (Vietnam.com, Getting to Know Ho Chi Minh City, people, third paragraph). There are also other religions practiced in Saigon, including Islam and Hinduism, but are found in smaller numbers (Vietnam.com, Getting to Know Ho Chi Minh City, people, third paragraph). Vietnam was the first independent republic in Southeast Asia.

I know that Vietnamese children are duty-bound to take care of their families. I get the impression that most American people in general, look after numero uno. The Vietnamese American conflict is one where he has to negotiate between his own needs and dreams of his family. I think you have to give credit where credit is due though – most Americans are learning to assimilate to new cultures. I have several Vietnamese friends and they are very traditional – Confucious types. In Vietnam you cannot trust the authorities (being a dictatorship). It took my Vietnamese friends a while to adjust to the idea that the police work for you rather than against you. Excellent write John.

This is a very well researched article. You’ve obviously put a lot of effort into this and good on you. You’ve clearly outlined the similarities and differences between the two cultures.

I have experienced differences in racial perception from friends that are mixed. Most of Black society accepts them and marvels at their eccentric looks while the majority of Vietnamese shuns or ignores them altogether.
