Are We Facing a Serious Choice?

Recovery from the recession may entail various social reforms and programs contrary to our capital ideology, bringing in the country a serious conflict between the power elite and the unwashed masses.

But now, faced with a really serious threat to their power, the corporate elite along with the military and its industrial allies are not likely to accept what they will call a turn to socialism anymore than our withdrawal from oil rich Iraq and any sort of contact with Iran. But this time the corporate interests control the press, have a well oil propaganda system, the war on terror, and masses of people angered at the presence of a Blackman in the White House along with a powerful Christian Right seeking a Christian dominated system while sanctifying in various way the corporate system, just as they did the monarchic ones in Europe. And we must not forget that Obama is ordering a planned withdrawal from Iraq, much against the desires of the military, just like Kennedy was ordering the withdrawal from Vietnam against the wishes of the military. With the proper propaganda, they can fan the feelings of enough of the masses to find support for overthrowing a government which they would say is taking us down the path of extinction of what America is supposed to be. If they succeed, they will set up a government which will not only put them in control, but will control the masses through a police state quelling opposition under the cover of the patriotism and religious dogma which they will fan, as do all demagogues.

It appears that we are faced with a choice between some form of socialism or government run economy, and corporate run government, fascism if you want to tag it. The chances of reviving capitalism as it once was has likely been destroyed by capitalistic ideologies of free market economics, deregulation and other form of empowerment of corporate interests enriching the elite which brought us to the present economic crisis.

Everything indicates that we are facing a far more serious economic collapse than the press is talking about, and if this is so, some form of the scenario described above is likely to result. We might be facing the third attempt at an overthrow of democracy and imposition of control by the corporate interests. But this time not only is the military/industrial complex a far greater force than those who attempted a coup in 1933 against Roosevelt, the religious right can be bought in and the country in distress over the economic collapse will bring in those elements easily moved by propaganda, patriotism and the dreams of the Christian Right. To add to all this, our Black president would be an excellent tool to agitate a good number of those harboring racist views.

This may sound pessimistic, but Churchill was probably right when he said the pessimists are realists.
