Are You An Emo?
Music genre, fashion statement or emotional dilemma?
Every now and then you can see young people walking by the streets, their hair straightened and treated with highlights covering half of their faces, ghostly pale, red lips,a mascara or black eyeliner in their eyes, wearing a hoodie that shadows their faces even more, skimpy jeans and the ever popular chucks and the seriousness or sadness in their faces.
So you might wonder what really is Emo. It was a genre for some (though others don’t approve): a fashion statement.
There is an unresolved debate if Emo was really a music genre-some say that it is for it is a different side of rock that protrudes an image of being sensitive,it requires the strenght and guts for men to show what they really feel and they really deserves a praise for that- But on the other hand, some say it was not for it depicted weakness of men. Rock enthusiast also criticize Emo for they lack elements of strenght and power.
Actually, Emo originated or evolved from New wave songs which possess highly Emotional content and sophistication that it engulfs or even alters the Emotion or state of being. Then New Wave evolved into Goth Music which portrays sadness, loneliness and Death. Alas!Goth Music evolved and Emo was born.Music is so powerful that it can influence the way you think and act. So when you listen to Emo songs, you feel sad, downthrodden, makes you want to breakdown and cry,and you feel as if the world has been turned up against you. This actually happens to young listeners (especially teens) who encounter Emotional instability due to their hormones. You can see that an Emo’s age range is 13 yrs up to late twenties. They were often the teens or pre-adults who have experienced traumatic experiences such as bullying, relationship break-ups,job turn-downs and even death. They often feel that there would be no hope for them. They often resort to listening Emo music as a release or escape but little do they know that it would just make matters worse. To quell down the sadness they would rely on alcohol, take illegal drugs or worse commit suicide.
I could personally recommend or advice to parents who has a teen (eventhough he/she is not an Emo fanatic) to regularly talk to them, just to make sure that they are not keeping any pain inside of them. Im not saying Emo music was bad for them, but its much better if youre teen knows that they have someone to rely on and doesnt have the impression that he or she is alone.
It really doesnt hurt to listen to Emo songs, but as long as you dont internalize it. It is also cool to have a fashion statement but one person does not need to wear a burden of sadness or a frown on his face in order prove he/she is Emo. As a writer, i really am not against it, for i used to have that Emo phase in my teen, and was proud that if i haven’t been an Emo i wouldn’t be the person who i am now.
