Brazil Project
Looking at Brazil.
Then you look at the point of schooling. In the evidence given it shows no sign that any of Roberto’s went or go to school, it looks like the female members of the family don’t work or go to school. Both Maria and her brother go to school and she also has an open mind and the opportunity for higher education where as it is known fact that Roberto will never even get a chance to go to collage let alone university. Meaning that he may very well work as a shoe shine boy for the rest of his life. With out a good education it will be very hard for him to find a job; I doubt his sisters will ever find work either. His school has little teaching resources; Maria seems to have quite good schooling.
Maria is said to have quite a nice house with a large garden. There is no reference to Roberto having a garden at all, only a two roomed house. I would say that this type of slum with seven all sleeping in one room is not the height of poverty but nearing it as this world progresses, into a higher economic status.
Another point I would like to compare is that both Maria’s work and have good jobs which pay a lot as the family seems to benefit from such luxuries as a maid. This also reflects on education, from the sort of jobs they have and seeing as they are quite well paid they obviously went on to study particular areas. Whereas only Roberto’s father works and owns very little, in my opinion hardly enough to keep a family of seven going.
Also it is said two of Roberto’s sisters nearly died because of the spread of disease due to the open sewage system outside his house. They nearly died which may indicate that they didn’t access to medical help. There is no mentioning of any of Maria’s family being critically ill. So we must assume they have access to medication and a doctor.
