Can Work be Unhealthy?
As the Australia faces an increase in obesity, could it be related to our increasingly busy work lives?
Things have changed in the past 50 years, prices have gone up, our lives have gotten busier and our waist lines have grown.
Most of us are working 40 to 50 hour weeks Monday to Saturday in an office in the city. Our lunch’s consist of take aways and alot of the time our dinners consist of alcohol and dining out at either a fast food outlet a restuarant or cafe. With this sort of lifestyle how can we expect to keep our weights in a healthy ratio.
I usually do 10 weeks of full time work away from home at the begining of each year, then go back to my usual work from home routine. In this 10 week period I was working a 30 hour week however had to travel an hour to and from the workplace each day Monday to Friday. Now, working like this I found myself increasingly fatigued, not having the energy to work out each day and not having the energy to prepare and cook a healthy meal for myself and my family each night. I am usually very strict about the exercise and food that my family gets, yes a bit of a health fenatic I guess. After 10 weeks of this I found myself unfit, unhealthy (dull hair, bad skin etc) and had put on a few extra kilograms.
In just a 10 week period, working like this it obviously had a negative affect on my health and my lifestyle. Now think if most of the population is living like this each week and most likely working even harder then what I was, then no wonder our waist lines are growing!
In a society where everyone is looking for a quick fix to drop a few kilos, and where we are constantly being told that the Health and Wellness Industry is starting to boom. Maybe we need to slow down a bit, find a more health and family friendly way to work. If not I’m afraid the obesity crisis will get worse. Everyone need’s time out to relax, to exercise and even just to prepare a healthy meal at the end of the day. Think of how we want the future generation to end up.
