College Life: Attending Freshman Orientation

All colleges hold orientation at the beginning of each year. Most schedule it about one week prior to classes beginning.

These programs offer a chance for the new freshman to meet other students, administrators, juniors and seniors who are eager to find new members for their fraternities and sororities. It can also be a time to pick up ID’s, dorm keys and other necessities.

The Orientation

Freshman orientation is an introduction program offered a few weeks or so before classes actually start. Most orientation programs require you to sign up for it and to send in any reservations and fees ahead of time.

Be sure you read through all the new information you have received from the college and return the required documents. You should really try to attend this as well as the several other programs most colleges hold in the weeks leading up to class. This is an excellent opportunity to get a feel for what college life is all about.

You will also gain valuable information as to finding your way around campus and where other buildings and areas are located which you will be utilizing on a daily basis. These programs also offer an opportunity to meet the class instructors and important administrative personnel.

There will also be an opportunity to pick up your library pass, meal tickets, security ID and other important items all students require.

Orientation Advice:

Always obtain complete information on all of the activities being offered. Be sure to attend orientation and to take it seriously. Decide which activities you would to participate it and read through all the material provided.

If you already have met your dorm roommate, do not be tempted to attend the orientation with him or her and instead go solo. You are at orientation as a means of also meeting others, to make new friends and get yourself used to what college life is all about. You will be far less likely to take full advantage of the experience if you are attached to someone else. Search out the important offices and introduce yourself to staff.

Avoid Getting Lost in Space:

Many campuses cover an area of 350 acres and this is considered a “small” college. To help you find your way get an individual map of the campus. This is usually included in your orientation packet.

There are college bulletin board on campus that usually include a map. If you happen to forget your copy, do not panic and seek out one of these information boards. Find landmarks as you are getting to know your way around campus. This can be very helpful when getting turned around on campus. You might be surprised to find how pleasant and helpful other students are so do not be afraid to ask for directions.
