Myth of Human Body Exhibit-Cadavers On Display.

The famous Myths of Human Body invaded Manila. Myths of Human Body is an exhibit which showcases Dissected Cadavers. Statues seem to be a wax figure but don’t be fooled by what you see because all of it is made from real human flesh.

One of the Myths of Human Body’s aim is to expose different body system. Each system is linked to a Greek God like Zeus,Poseidon and Hades, naming few of them. Extremely artistic cuts and postures were done to the cadavers. The exhibits hall would be a little creepy for those who fear death.

The very main purpose of the exhibit is to persuade viewers to care for their own organs and system. The aim is brought by showing the progressive deterioration of body organs like lungs and heart if you continue smoking. According to the survey in University of Kassel in Germany, nine percent of exhibit viewers started to cut their smoking while twenty percent started to do regular exercise to stay healthy.

The Cadavers were preserved using the patented technique of Dr. Gunther Von Hagens called Plastination. Plastination is  tedious technique to preserve human body and prevent decomposition. Plastination has four key steps and consumes up to 1,500 hours to be fully performed. First step is to do the usual embalming using formaldehyde solution. Afterwards, the body would be dissected and cut to near its desired design. The cadaver would be  placed in a bath of freezing acetone. Acetone dehydrates the body by replacing the water and fats in the cells. The dehydrated cadaver would be submerged into a boiling polymer or silicone rubber. Polymer or silicone rubber would replace the acetone absorbed by the cells. The acetone evaporates, the silicone is absorbed by minimal application of heat. The final step is to harden the cadaver and fix its posture by either gas, heat or ultraviolet light application.

The Plasticinated Cadaver’s can be sold to Medical Practitioners but they need to secure proper documentation before acquiring one. Gunther still managed to sell other Plasticinated Flesh of  animal corpse to public. His products can be purchased and ordered through is www.plastination-products.com. Since the process is very complicated expect that his artworks are expensive. The average cost would be around $50,000 to $100,000 roughly. Check his product catalog here.

There are several Myths of Human Body exhibit world-wide. In Philippines the exhibit is held in Taguig and is expected to run until April 2011. Camera is not allowed inside the exhibit so it would be a bad news for D-SLR lovers.

JP, kahit siguro bayaran ako just to go there, I won’t LOL! Lalo pa sinabi mong hindi replica kundi galing din sa real cadavers. No way Jose! Not fearful of death but I don’t like seeing the internal organs hahaha!

A good article though. Interesting, specially about that plastination technique. Galing!

I’m sure we have visited the same exhibit although the one I saw was Body Worlds – The Human Brain. I know Body Worlds have several different exhibits on display around the world.

I found it very creepy but also very informative at the same time. I’m not sure I would visit another exhibit though.

My three articles cover the same topic from a different angle.

    Great post.

This was featured in jessica soho before. Human flesh talaga ang gamit dyan pero may consent ng mga may-ari ng katawan. Dumalaw yan dito sa Pinas,e. Di nga lang ako nakapunta. Gusto ko pa naman sana para makakuha ng photos. :)
