Culture and Arts in The Philippines

The Philippines is a country with a beautiful culture. The Filipinos are very thankful to the government for allocating funds for the promotion and conservation of the culture and arts.

Culture is a way of life, manisfestation of freedom and human rights. It needs due respect and it must be allowed to flourish. The Philippines has 87 dialects and 110 ethno-linguistic groups. Heritage is inherited from our ancestors. It is the legacy from the past. Examples of heritage are Spanish surnames that Filipinos use. Built heritage include old churches, bridges, temples, palaces and many more historical structures. Culture heritage is man-made. Natural heritage is God’s creation. It includes mountains,forests and lakes. Intangible heritage include music and sawikain. Tangible heritage include the Manunggul jar, Angono Petriloglyphs and other artifacts. Underwater cultural heritage include sunken ships and gold under the sea or rivers.

Government Agencies Responsible for the Culture and Arts in the Philippines:

1. National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCP)

It is the mother or head agency for the culture and arts in the Philippines. It is responsible for the conservation and promotion of the Philippine culture and arts.

2. National Museum of the Philippines

The National Museum of the Philippines is responsible for the evidences of the visul arts and tangible heritage such as archaeology, ethnology, botany,zoology,geology and collection of specimens.

3. National Historical Commission of the Philippines

Formerly the National Historical Institute(NHI), the NHCP is reponsible for the preservation of historical documents, shrines,monuments and historical signs.

4. National Archives

The National Archives is responsible for the preservation of old documents such as paperworks of our ancestors in the Philippines.

5. Cultural Center of the Philippines

The CCP is responsible for the conservation and promotion of the performing arts.

6. National Library

The National Library is responsible for the preservation of old books and collections of writers in the Philippines.

7. Deparment of Education

The Deparment of Education’s role is to attract students to appreciate and flourish the culture and arts in the Philippines.
