  1. Fortune cookies are not a traditional Chinese custom.  They were invented in 1920 in San Francisco by a worker in the Key Heong Noodle Factory.
  2. Toilet paper was invented in China in the late 1300s and originally was only for emperors.
  3. The Chinese invented paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing.
  4. Many children keep crickets as pets in China and cricket fighting is a popular amusement there also.
  5. China is one time zone.  Hard to believe with its size!
  6. Ping-pong is one of the most popular games in China, but was not invented there.
  7. Stamp collecting is the number one hobby in China.
  8. Like India, white is worn to funerals, unlike Americans who wear black.
  9. In China, red symbolizes happiness and is most commonly used at festivals and other happy occasions like weddings and birthdays there.
  10. 1,800 years before suspension bridges were used or seen in the west, the Chinese had invented them in 25 B.C.!
  11. The Chinese have the worlds oldest calendar that takes 60 years to complete called the lunar calendar that originated in 2600 B.C.
  12. The number of birth defects in China continues to rise and scientists blamed the severe air pollution for this problem.
  13. The 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing, China, were the most expensive games in history at a crazy 40 billion dollars!Image via Wikipedia
  14. There are 4 seas and about 14 countries that border China.
  15. Only 1600 giant pandas are living in the wild today, but they are China’s national treasure.
  16. The population of China is four times the population of United States.
  17. 1 in 5 people in the world is Chinese due to there large population.
  18. He Pingping who is only 73cm or 2.4 feet tall has been dubbed the worlds shortest man and lives in China.
  19. The Chinese language has over 20,000 characters and the average Chinese person only learns about 5000 of the characters in a lifetime.
  20. Accupuncture originated in China over 5000 years ago.

 

I wrote this article out of respect for the people of China.  These are all facts and no opinions.  The world is a diverse place and that is why I love it so much. <3
