Environment Dependency

“Intention to change the environment is human, but the obligation to change man is environment”.

This powerful line of statement has something to do with people’s way of life in accordance with the atmosphere/environment he destined or preferred to live. Literally, human adapts to his/her environment. It is in consideration that we – human beings depend on it. Where else can we go, but to be into it?

A good example to justify these crafts is the ethnics and tribes in the Philippines. Their cultures, customs and traditions are based and in line with the environment. Some of our brothers live above the sea, on the cave and at the tree. They wear “bahags” and feed on the environment they were meant to live. On the other hand, in contemporary and civilized cities such Manila, people prefer to adapt the fashion and lifestyle of the Eastern and Western countries. They believed that to be “in” they should learn to align with the modern times. They are accustomed to changes not only to their livelihoods, but to the new forms government as well.

“Changing environment does change man.” As world evolves and as century moves, human tends to change the environment. As discovery becomes abundant and advancement approaches, the environment delimits.

Technology such as innovation and automation i.e. computers and cell phones change the means of human beings. Before, the barter system (product in exchange of another product) is used by our ancestors in trade industry. Now, we need to make use of money that is done electronically. Industrialization and globalization affects the environment. This seems to be a total make-over or change.

Environment does pressure human beings to change. An individual will not be able to survive in a place where he is totally different. A good example is our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). It is for a fact that they tend to adapt the culture and beliefs of the country they are serving, otherwise their contracts will last. There is the term evolution.

Another example is professionalism. An educated person would seem to do good rather than an illiterate one. Because an educated person is nourished and sustained with knowledge on how to do well (i.e. Good Moral and Right Conduct (GMRC), Religion, Ethics, Etiquette). They are bounded with good ideas. This makes people trust them to do good rather than an illiterate one. Indeed, virtue is a learning process. This justifies the need of human beings for education in adhering to his environment.

Environment does not solely mean nature that includes fire, water, air and land. Its definition changes as time progresses. As of today, environment could mean custom, tradition, lifestyle, livelihood, culture and tradition. These are sub-elements rediscovered. Now, that we have climate change and environment dictates our ways of living, it could be assumed that environment could be use as a meter in measuring the length of stay of human beings in the world. No one could really tell how far environment could change man as we intend to change it.
