Get Involved in Houston-area Breast Cancer Events

For the past 26 years, October has been designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since its inception in 1984, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has brought together national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease and provide greater access to screening services.

If you’re in the Houston area and want to get involved, you’re in luck: Seven major breast cancer awareness events are scheduled for the end of September and throughout October. See below for the events sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Houston.

Marburger Farm Antique Show

What: This outdoor antique show features more than 350 dealers from across the U.S. and around the world on a 43-acre field. Look for architectural, English, Continental, Asian, industrial, garden, Americana, painted furniture, fine art, early Texas, mid-century modern, French, silver, jewelry and textile antiques, and a portion of T-shirt sales and gate revenue will be donated to the Komen Houston Affiliate.

Lace Up For the Cure Pasta Party and Auction

What: Dine on Italian food, mingle and bid on auction items at this semi-formal party, where proceeds will go toward breast cancer research.

2010 Komen Houston Race for the Cure

What: Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the largest footrace in Houston at Race for the Cure, a 5k course with running and walking events for competitive runners and families.

Pearland Invitational Golf Tournament

What: Hosted by the Standard Bearers Foundation, the Pearland Invitational Golf Tournament will raise funds for the Komen Houston Affiliate through participant registration and individual donations. Golfers will play for par, as well as prizes including roundtrip airfare for two, a home entertainment system and an automobile.

Nancy Owens Memorial Luncheon

What: At the Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation’s 9th annual luncheon, male breast cancer survivor and Komen Houston Board Member Allen Wilson will speak to attendees, and a portion of proceeds from the event will go to the Komen Houston Affiliate.

Project Pink Seminar, Luncheon and Style Show

What: Enjoy fashion, food and supporting the fight against breast cancer at this seminar, luncheon (with food provided by Merche’), style show featuring upscale women’s apparel and silent auction hosted by North Cypress Medical Center.

Administaff Small Business Classic Golf Tournament

What: Augusta Pines Charity is hosting this weeklong golf tournament that features a junior clinic, junior Pro-Am and championship Pro-Am. A portion of the proceeds from volunteer registration fees and matching sponsor donations will go to the Komen Houston Affiliate.
