Heroes or Peasants
A short, fun essay on freedom and life in a westernized country.
A Possible Future?
Do you live in a developed country, one with wealth and supposed democracy? Well if so, this article hypothesizes about your freedom and your individuality.
Lets consider are we as free as we could or want to be or are we manipulated, brainwashed and governed out of searching for the truth and living as truly as possible. Has the potential of the ordinary to follow the hero’s journey been denied? A short personal essay, for fun, no answers expected.
Money, Insurance, Mortgage and the Proper Life
Lets hope you are not having to ring the Debt free companies, you are not being re-possessed, made redundant, that your children go to good schools, the crime rate is nice and low where you live, your local hospital has your support, you have two good cars and can get the best insurance deal from those nice people on the TV, that you pay your council tax, on time of course, good investments, good jobs and you know that the elected government makes your life pleasant, safe and nicely green and clean, even though you did not vote for them… somehow they are doing the decent thing.
Even if you have been flooded out, or victims of crime, the perpetrators of which will be caught by the fact they take drugs and come from unfortunate dysfunctional families, the government has got things in place to sort it out, properly. A good place for all our children to grow up in?
They can e-mail their friends, and we can have dinner with their friend’s parents.
All sounds perfect and good, the lovely NHS that the UK has, the freedom of choice we have in the Supermarket while quietly saying we should all be aware of the effects on global warming that eating sugar snap peas from Africa has?
The workplace is very safe, because there are lots of policies to protect us and we have done lots of Risk assessment and we all are registered for various professional capabilities.
So, where is this leading, we have it pretty good don’t we?
Mental Health
So why is there in the UK and many other developed countries a huge increase in depression, anxiety and addictions?
Why has the government in the UK had to find some new way to halt the huge rise in mental health problems, to halt the large economic cost and human cost of this?
If we are so well off why is our mental health declining so much?
When did your eat too much last? When did you drink too much last?
The Modern Peasantry
Peasants… often small landowners, farm labourers, poor and uneducated.
How do you feel as fight to get on the underground train at 9.00am? How do you feel when your holidays end?
What do you think when you pay your council tax? How many times have you been filmed when walking in your local town? What information do the big companies have on you? Who phones you at 8.p.m. to sell, enquirer and demand from you?
What does your bank charge you? What happened if you were divorced? How did the maintenance get sorted? Did a government body make that decision? The television news, must watch, eh?
The Author’s Questions:
- Do you feel free?
- Are your needs being met?
- Do you truly function as an individual?
Heroes
- Can you fly?
- Can you read people’s minds?
- Can you move through time?
- Can you predict the future?
- Are you indestructible?
- Can you change anything?
It is possible we are not really living as we could be, or are we at a place in Westernized society to make a leapt into a creative evolutionary period to become something special at this point in history, learning true freedom and peace, or perhaps we are to become the Homo Genised, the perfectly correct race, green, clean and all paid up?
“Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you” Jean-Paul Sartre.
