Homosexuality and Islam
Acts of non-heterosexuality are increasingly being recognized in many of the western societies. In some countries, laws have been passed giving legal recognition for same-sex marital relations. However, unnatural sexual relations have not been received well in the religious sphere with many religions grappling with censures against errant members. Within Islam, homosexuality is greatly frowned upon. Islam faithful do not like to be associated with such rather sinful practices (Wafer, 211)
According to Islam teachings, the aim of natural sexuality is procreation. The quran teaches that natural and lawful sexual relations between people of opposite sexes have been designed by God himself for the purpose of preserving the human race and as such, homosexuality is an offending practice to the natural aim and role of sexuality. Homosexuality is aide spread phenomenon not only among the Western societies but also among the Muslim faithful as well (Philadelphia, 101). The Islamic religion dos not accept any justification for unnatural acts of sexuality such as homosexuality regardless of the physical, psychological or biological factors that may influence people to indulge in this type of unnatural immorality. In essence, Muslim faithful do not recognize the validity or reality regarding the existence of any factors that can influence men to commit cats of homosexuality. Just like fornication, homosexuality is frowned upon by the Islamic faith. In any event, as Wafer points out, human couture all over the world does not permit people to engage in such acts notwithstanding the naturalness of the act.
Macnutt says that Islam teaches men to exercise restraint and self-control to overcome emotional and biological demands as well as disturbances within them that may lead them into committing sinful acts (Macnutt, 123). According to him, man being the highest species of God’s creation has amoral duty to exercise complete control over the dictates of his lust whether such lust drives him into doing moral or immoral things. Accordingly, the Holy Quran instructs men to refrain from all forms of practices that may constitute smearing their souls and intellects with indulgences which do not please God (Stephen & Will, 302).
Prophet Muhammad thought that among the many things he feared most was sodomy. Unfortunately, this is one of the most repulsive acts observed among people in modern times. The Koran teaches that acts of homosexuality can be so disgusting to God that such acts can intensify his anger to heights where he may not even consider looking at the doer. The impression here is that through unnatural sexual acts, a man lowers his humanity and heralds his own extermination. In addition, unnatural sexual acts imply wretchedness and misery on the part of the doer (Wafer, 242).
