How Many Children Would You Have If?
Imagine the earths population has exploded, resources are limited. Laws are put in place to control population growth and urban sprawl. How many kids would you have if such rules (various scenarios) were to fall into place?
Rule 1. Due to the lack of space for any further housing your offspring must be housed on your property. You can divide your property to allow a room for a house for them if zoning allows. Cities will not be allowed to expand further into the country and rural properties will not be allowed to be subdivided unless to house offspring of the property owners.
OR
Rule 2. Due to lack of resources for building more houses, people will be required to house their unwed children indefinitely. Should your child marry, their spouse must come live with you, or your child must move into the home belonging to the family of the spouse. Rent shall not be charged in either case. No new houses shall be constructed.
OR
Rule 3. People will not be funded by the government for child support in anyway. People who wish to have children will do so at their expense. Children who are not properly cared for shall be removed and parents shall have no rights to them. Parents who have had 2 or more children removed shall be sterilized.
OR
Rule 4. A maximum lifespan of 80 will be enforced for people who have one child. This lifespan shall be reduced by 15 years for every additional child the couple chooses to have. For example a couple with three children shall be executed at age 50. This is to conserve world resources.
OR
Rule 5. Your children shall not be allowed to bare children until either you, or your spouse, have passed away. This is to conserve world resources, and shall be considered the rule of replacement. When pregnancies happen sooner, either abortion shall occur or execution of a parent shall take place to keep the population level.

What will you chose when the crisis of world over population hits your home?
A lot of people assume days of such rules will never come, that the world has unlimited space and resources. Yet many parts of the world already have more people than resources and many countries have already placed population measures on their people. Even if we are too assume that food will be unlimited (which it will not), we must remember that fresh water, and control of our waste are other considerations.
While this piece may be a bit extreme, and alarmist, it is designed to raise some issues and thoughts, because if we do not act responsibly now, and reduce our birth rate, it may be imposed on us, or our children, sometime in the future. I am sure the Chinese didn’t think it would happen to them either.
At 6.7 Billion we have already exceeded the United Nations sustainable population limit of 5 Billion, and are seeing problems as a result of these raised numbers.

Thought provoking piece. Personally I am already in favor for the one child per family idea, since I believe that the world is getting over populated. But I would never take such drastic measurements. Things will correct itself: some couples will not have children and others will have two. And the Chinese have controlled themselves pretty well by making laws that produce an overpopulation on men, which will drop the birth rates for the future as well, since you actually need mainly women to reproduce.

many cultures already live with all their family (extended and otherwise) in the same home. It would not be a problem. I have four children and it would have been horrid to have lived in a Country where you were told you could only have one. More and more people (women mainly) are opting out of having any children at. I guess I am lucky. I opted to stay at home and care and bring up my children and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Great thought provoking article.

Much food for thought here Brenda. People need to really think about how many is too many. Excellent!

B- usually I agree with you, and while this was indeed thought provoking, I am still not an advocate for population control. If you can emotionally, physically, and financially afford to care for them, then have what you will. My problem is those that know that they are going to have to depend on the gov, charity, etc..(ie occtomom) having children that they know full well that they can not attend to in any fashion.
love ya B- but I had to disagree here.

It is thought provoking but perhaps we may find colonies in outerspace by the time things become so drastic. Since all my children were adopted I did not add to the over population, just relocated some of it.

Before we take these drastic measures, I think that relocation is a much better idea. Modern birth control has already disrupted the demographic patterns that have helped humans to survive for thousands of years. We need a balance of age groups to ensure that there are enough workers to support the aged and to care for and educate the young, and to provide healthcare for all. We are already paying for this disruption in Europe, Canada and the U.S. with pension funds running dry.

Children our a gift from God and should always be cherished. To have more children than you can look after and support properly is wrong, and is a abuse of Gods gifts.
Excellent article.

Food for thought and a very serious issue. You cannot cross the limit. I don’t know about God but nature certainly will take its course. Good write.

Interesting thoughts. I suppose we could only await government legislation to regulate overpopulation we it does becomes off hand.

Quite thought provoking. I think families should be allowed at least two children but no more than that. My husband and I had two and it was all we could handle.
