Impolite Things That Should Not be Done in Australia, Asia, and Africa

Different people have different views. Something that is good in one’s opinion might not hold true for another. Let us take a tour of actions that are considered impolite in different Asian and African countries, and also Australia.

It is rude to yell at waiters when you are in restaurants. Instead make eye contact with your waiter who is watching your table from the service area. After making the eye contact, you may ask for your check by drawing a small box in the air. Filipinos treat it offensive if foreigners join to criticize the surroundings.

In Philippines, children are not encouraged to join in the conversations of adults. If your children do this, you have to apologize on behalf of them and take them outside.

Wiping or blowing your nose in a restaurant even though the food is spicy, is considered rude in South Korea. Instead you go to the restroom for doing this. You should stand up when the elders enter a room or while speaking to them. This is common in most Asian countries. Always the elders should be greeted first.

Pouring one’s own drinks, displaying the bottom of the foot and calling the elders by their first names are also treated as impolite things in South Korea. Tipping is inappropriate. Patting the head of an elder or superior is extremely rude.

Touching somebody on the foot is inappropriate in Thailand as foot is the most impure region of the body. Touching somebody on the head particularly the elder’s is also impolite, hence you should apologize immediately for this.

Kissing or any kind of display of affection at any public places and stepping on bills or coins are considered rude. Also pointing your foot at somebody especially at the Buddha is extremely rude in Thailand.

Public affection is a severe offense in Malaysia. Pointing with your forefingers at people, touching somebody’s head, crossing your legs in the presence of elders, inserting the thumb between the fore and middle fingers of a closed fist and placing an open palm on the top of a sideways held fist of the other hand is considered rude.

It is rude to expect the guest to pay for his drinks etc. who is being invited for a social event in Ghana. When greeting people in a home the guest should greet every person including children and babies by shaking hands. While greeting the most elderly person present should be greeted first.

It is rude to look into the eyes of an elder or a superior while speaking in South Africa.  While elders are speaking one should look downwards.

When paying cashiers keeping money on the table instead of giving hand is impolite in Australia. However money can be left on the tables while paying at restaurants. Not removing the price tag when giving a gift to someone and tipping are considered rude.

This is also same in New Zealand. Careless pronunciation of “Māori” place-names and the word “Māori” is treated as disrespect. Not to greet someone when passing in the street is a rude thing.

Valli, you have listed many things that are considered rude in the states too, but often people are letting their manners slide. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find young people now days who have been taught proper manners.

For the un-adventurous, great reason to stay that way and stay home lol! Being Polish, I know that customs and traditions are an important way of life.

Fantistic piece of information. Love to see more.
