Indian Caste System

by Dante Monaldo in Society, April 21, 2009

About the wrongs of the Indian caste system.

For thousands of years, the people of India have been divided into castes, or groups, based on the person’s birth, wealth, or occupation.  For example, if you were born into a poor, lower caste family, chances are that you will be a poor lower caste member for the rest of your life.  Below is a list of the different castes and what jobs are in the caste from the highest ranking to the lowest.

  • Brahmins – India’s priests.
  • Kshatriyas – Rulers and warriors.
  • Vaisyas – Farmers, craftspeople and traders.
  • Sudras – Workers and servants.

For the higher caste members, such as the rulers and warriors, they enjoy not having the dirty jobs, such as the jobs of farmers and workers.  It is very disgusting what some of these lower caste members have to do.  Some have to clean toilets for the rest of their lives.  Many people have tried to change this law, but many government officials like their place at the top of the chain and don’t want a change. The government might not want a change, but many people know that this is so close to slavery that it has to end!
