Inequity A Staple of our Society

by Richard L. Naran in Society, December 28, 2006

Recent events in the news have shown how inequity of judgment is an American way of life.

Rehab and submitting to drug testing are two of the conditions for Miss USA Tara Connors to keep her crown. She admitted to underage drinking in New York bars. Of course there is an alleged bad behavior of bring men back to the pageant suite. Unfortunately, Miss Nevada was not as lucky. Kathy Rees was exposed on the internet for dropping her top revealing her breast, lower her pants showing off her thong underwear and (oh my goodness) kissing another woman. Personally, I feel her true offense was that this took place in Florida on the other side of the country from the state she formerly represented.

Baseball’s Lasting Milledge allegedly had sexual encounters with underage girls and as a first round draftee the Mets aware of the situation gave him $1 million plus signing bonus. Tank Johnson of the Chicago Bears busted for firearm violations while on parole for a firearms charge received a one game suspension. What is one sixteenth of several million plus a year? Better yet, will he miss it?

Where is the justice here? First of all to get to be Miss Nevada, Kathy Rees didn’t parade around exactly wearing an eastern Indian Sari or a Muslim Hijab. Secondly, isn’t Nevada the home to Las Vegas and legal brothels? How it is their beauty pageant contract has a morality clause?

Morality must be a state by state thing. In New York, state comptroller Alan Hevesi earned re-election even after admitting violations that amount to abuse of position. Now, after the election he is being asked to resign or face prosecution. The people forgave him and the government did not.

President George Bush is said to have had a drinking problem in the past. Because it was before the internet age, no pictures have shown up of him drunk and stupid in his younger years. Now that he is sober, at least we won’t see pictures of him being drunk. We elected the man to lead our country knowing that he was evolved is banking failure scandal.

The inequity has produced many strange reactions throughout modern history. President Jimmy Carter was ridiculed for publicly admitting he lusted in his heart. The antics of his family became tabloid fodder and his image was tarnished. Whereas President Clinton was has achieved icon status despite being the staple of tabloid news for eight years. His own brother’s antics rivaled Carter’s brother. Yet the man is revered. Could the key be one of them kept his pants on and the other allegedly did not? That would explain why Tara Connor, who was reported to have a habit of picking up guys and bringing them back to the hotel, kept her job and Kathy Rees did not.

Can any of us ever say we did not do something stupid in their life? Vanessa Williams resigned her Miss America crown for posing in the nude prior. Today she is a multi-media star. She is worth millions. There seems to be a smudge on the line between what is moral and what is not.

What is to happen to Kathy Rees? If the past is any clue, ten minutes after the news hit the wire, Playboy and Penthouse started to dial her for dollars. Maybe a Kitty Kelly wannabe will contact her to write a kiss and tell all. She could become the face of the “Girls Gone Wild” set. Miss Rees could start out on Letterman and take it running from there. If the woman plays here cards right, she could translate this into a fast fortune. Beauty pageant girls are not that much different from pro athletes. They start training at a young age and as soon as they catch someone’s eye, they get that ticket to ride. It appears there could be more equity than inequity in the situation.
