Laws and Our Chosen Leader
Every person in our country votes for someone as a leader, someone who would support their views. Sometimes we end up getting dissapointed at the fact that the leader didn’t make the decision we thought he/she would. It is really important to know how laws in our country get passed, so that it can help us decide not just who to vote number one but number two,,ect.
The eight steps used to pass a law are:
Step 1 the prime minister and most of the senior ministers decide which bill the parliament will consider.
Step 2 a draft bill of the proposed law is prepared by government lawyers.
Step 3 a copy of the bill is given to all members of the House of Representatives. Then the title is read out, this is first reading.
Step 4 the responsible minister explains why the bill is important, then the government and opposition get a chance to debate; this is known as second reading.
Step 5 each part of the bill is discussed in detail, this is known as Consideration in detail; changes may be made at this step
Step 6 the bill, with any changes, goes through a third reading. Then a vote is taken and if majority approves, the bill is passed to the Senate.
Step 7 Similar steps of 3-6 go through the Senate. If there are any changes made, the bill is sent back to the House of Representatives for debate and vote. If the Senate votes approval to the law it is sent to the Governor-General.
Step 8 after the governor-general signs the bill, it becomes an Act of Parliament and an Australian Law.
So hopefully i’ve shown you that its not just our countries main leader that decideds the rules but a a lot of other people, including the ones that the community votes second on their choice of government. Think about this next time you are voting for someone.
