Lines Do Pick-up

An expository on the trending Pick-up lines.

“May kakambal ka ba?

Kasi you’re in my mind

yet you’re in my heart.”

Nowadays, pick-up lines are trending worldwide.  When you open your television and saw a conversation between opposite sex, you wouldn’t be surprised if you’ll hear one of the sentences as part of a pick-up line.  It would be surprising if there would be none.  Even more surprising if a conversation would start with a silly “hi” or “hello” and end up with “nice meeting you” or “goodbye”.  Yes, conversation as we know it does evolve.

A pick-up line, from the start, was just a conversation opener with the intent of engaging an unfamiliar person for romance, or dating.  Overt and sometimes humorous displays of romantic interest, pick-up lines advertise the wit of their speakers to their target listeners.  But as we hear it often nowadays, the use of a pick-up line evolved.  From being a simple conversation opener for dating to an “outwit my lines” competition.

Pick-up lines range from straightforward conversation openers such as introducing oneself, providing information about oneself, or asking someone what their likes are to elaborate attempts including humor such as ”If I could rearrange the alphabet, I would put ‘U’ and ‘I’ together”.  It is as if, every time you are too see someone, you would think of something that could let her think that you are somehow funny and fun to be with.  It is like putting an icing on top of a cake or just simply blowing your horns in front of a sign that says “No Blowing of Horns”.  In short, starting a conversation that would catch her attention. A perfect way to get you into dating.

On the other hand, as what the teens are starting to get a hang with, pick-up lines are now used for outwitting one another.  A simple competition of how well do you catch an attention of a person or how good are you at using pick-up lines.  It is as if, every time a fine ingredient was used in a recipe, a good ingredient will be used to create a finer recipe. An outburst competition without a real purpose at all.  It is very different from just using a pick-up line for a conversion opener.

Start a conversation with it or just say it to let everyone know how good you are at using pick-up lines does not matter anymore. It is now part of our life, to hear it often and to use it often as well.  On present time, without it, it would be like eating a complete course meal without an appetizer.  Pick-up lines made our life more colorful as they say. People interpret it as a common evolution of the talking society.

“Was that an earthquake or did u just rock my world?”

It is quite amusing that the writer had an interesting observation on a trend many are into but fail to reflect upon. I personally like how he used metaphors to further bring spice to his article. However, the article contained many sentence fragments, making it a bit hard to read. Still the article was entertaining but at the same time informative.
