Lolita Fashion
All about Lolita Fashion! Where the name came from, how it got started, and all the different types!
“Lolita” is a name that comes from the Spanish name “Dolores” (Lola for short), so Lolita actually means “little Lola,” or “small sorrow” (coming from the meaning of Dolores). The name was popularized from a book written in 1955 by Vladimir Nabokov about “middle-aged Humbert Humbert, who becomes obsessed and sexually involved with a 12-year-old girl named Dolores Haze” (Wikipedia).
Well, there is now a new form of “Lolita,” called Lolita Fashion. Lolita Fashion started in Japan as a street fashion in the 80’s and has grown into an icon for Japanese subculture and has become world wide. The clothes centers around Victoria fashion and a look of innocence and cuteness, giving almost a little girl effect, which is how the name of the types of closes came to be; based on the title of the book.
There are also many parts of a Lolita outfit which usually consists of a headdress, a blouse, a dress, bloomers, and socks. They can come in many types and you can add many more elements of a Lolita outfit but it is essential to have these elements.
In addition to parts, there are also many styles to Lolita. The most common is Gothic Lolita which is more of a traditional style to the Victorian era and has neutral and dark colors. Sweet Lolita includes colors that are light and mostly pink and focuses on the more child-like aspect of Lolita, sort of looks like Alice from “Alice in Wonderland”. Other parts of Sweet Lolita include Hime (princess) Lolita that shows a princess side, Country Lolita which shows the “typical country girl” in American, such as Dorthy from “The Wizard of Oz,” and Classic Lolita which is about looking classy and elegant.
But to some people, it may be more then fashion but also a way of life! Being a Lolita can mean not just dressing beautiful but also being beautiful. Lolita is about being a proper and beautiful young lady.
