Police arrested the actress Lucy Lawless (43) and five other Greenpeace activists on Monday (2/27/2012), four days after they climb the tower an oil drilling ship. Action to prevent the ship left the dock Noble Discoverer of New Zealand.
The police lowered the protesters from the 53 meter high tower on a boat docked at the Port of Taranaki. Ship chartered by oil company Shell was due to leave port last weekend to drill five exploration wells in the Arctic.
Lawless and six other activists climbed the tower on Friday (2/24/2012) morning, in order to increase awareness about the destructive oil drilling in the Arctic.
One of the activists had come down from the tower on Saturday (02/25/2012) and facing charges of illegally boarded the ship. The seven activists are facing charges of serious crime, robbery. They will be confronted in the courts of New Zealand, Thursday (03/01/2012).
Lawless, a resident of New Zealand, famous through her role as Xena on the television series Xena: Warrior Princess, and the Starz cable television series, Spartacus.
Told the Associated Press on Friday last week, Lawless said, it is difficult for them to survive long in the top of the tower due to wind gusts strong enough.
He states must take a stand against oil drilling in the Arctic and the fight against global warming. “I have three children. I have to make sure that they can grow and develop properly, and it is not possible in an environment increasingly polluted and corrupted,” he said. “We must act while you still can”.
Shell-led New Zealand, Rob Jager said the protest was very dangerous. He was happy because the action was over. Nevertheless, he remains disappointed that Greenpeace manyatakan ignore a company offer to sit down together to discuss the issue.
Shell spokeswoman, Shona Geary said, Noble Discoverer will leave the port within a few days.
According to Executive Director of Greenpeace New Zealand, Bunny McDiarmid, the protests have ended well. “More than 100,000 people will send a message to Shell opposed the plan of exploration in the Arctic,” he said.
