Mariachi Recognized as World Heritage

UNESCO says, mariachi music has come into being a Mexican national identity.

Mariachi, traditional Mexican music, finally gaining recognition as one of the world cultural heritage by UNESCO on Sunday, November 27, 2011. With the recognition of this, Mexican authorities are expected to preserve the tradition of the famous.

“Communities and families have passed the knowledge, history, and excitement Mariachi tradition from generation to generation. Mariachi has considered their own property,” according to Mexican authorities said that they send in an application to UNESCO, quoted by CNN.

Mariachi is a type of music that comes from the state of Jalisco in Mexico, and is usually sung on special occasions. Instruments used by the mariachi players are guitar, violin and trumpet. Players also use the traditional dress, complete with sombrero hat.

Of Jalisco, mariachi spread to all corners of Mexico so it became one of the state symbols. UNESCO said the fame of mariachi in Mexico has come into being a unifying national identity.

“Listening is one way of preserving traditional mariachi. Mariachi Ability usually passed on from parent to child through the appearance of mariachi groups in religious events, parties, or other event,” UNESCO wrote in a letter of endorsement.

Jorge Aquino, director of the Mexican music School in Mexico City, says that the mariachi has been greatly developed and attracted international attention. “Even in countries like the United States, Japan, and Colombia, there is a school mariachi, mariachi classes, and even a special degree majors who study mariachi,” he said.

Not just this time Mexico recorded a UNESCO cultural heritage list. In 2008, the country managed to record festival, El Dia de Los Muertos or Day spirit as a cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO.
