New Zealand faced the “worst maritime disaster” in its history after a merchant ship which ran aground fuel began to contaminate a marine treasure populated by whales and dolphins in front of Tauranga in the North Island. The freighter Rena has poured more than 300 of the 1,700 tons of fuel transported from that sank in the Astrolabe reef, about 12 miles from Tauranga, according to latest estimates, which are ten times higher than the previous. The ship’s captain was arrested and charged with causing unnecessary danger.
