Montreal is the second largest city in Canada. It was originally called Ville-Marie (City of Mary), however it is presently named after Mount Royal, which is a three-headed hill at the heart of the city. It is located in the southwest province of Quebec, approximately 167 kilometers from Ottawa, the federal capital. It is known as the historic city of Canada, being home to many historical landmarks, such as the 19th century headquarters of all major Canadian banks, “Saint Joseph’s Oratory.”
Seventy point five percent of the population respectively, speak French at home in Montreal, which would place the city as the second most French oriented city after Paris in the entire world. Two years ago the magazine, “Forbes” placed Montreal in tenth position as to being the cleanest city of the world. Montreal is also home to the “Underground City”, which is 18 miles of climate controlled area full of shops.
Montreal is home to three point four million people. Precipitation in Montreal is abundant, with an annual snowfall of eighty-four inches per year in the winter. Rainfall also plays a big role in Montreal, as there is thirty-five point three inches of rainfall a year. The warmest month of the year is July and temperatures range from twenty-five to thirty degrees Celsius during the day, and twenty to twenty-five degrees during the night. In conclusion Montreal is a fast-growing city, in which history plays a big role.
