My Kind of Hero
This essay was written for the Voice of Democracy Contest. It was supposed to answer the question “Does America Still Have Heroes?”.
In the world today there can be many kinds of heroes. The original hero seems to be the war hero that has been through the worst, and definitely has the scars to prove it. This is probably what most people are going to talk about when they write this essay, but not me. I do not mean to harm anyone with disrespect when I say that I personally believe that there are better heroes than the ones that fight wars. The people that I am talking about are the everyday average ordinary heroes. The ones that get up and go to work every day and hide their secrets and hardships away from everyone else around them. These are the single moms and dads, the ex-addicts, the people who adopt a child just to give them a better chance at a good life, and anyone else that works so hard every single day of their lives just so they can have another day with a roof over their heads and enough food to eat. That is my kind of hero.
There are people I know that work so hard for their family to be able to have nice things, and they never give themselves anything nice. They never complain or ask for help. They just work and work because they know it needs to be done. I especially find this astounding when it is a single mother or father with numerous children. Whenever I see that I just know that person is strong and has had a rough time through the years. It makes you think what made them a single parent. Was it divorce or did their companion pass away? Either way they got through it, and that is a definite hero in my eyes. Someone else that should be included in this group is everyone’s parents. These are the people that molded you and did everything for you when you were growing up. Where would anyone be without their parents?
Another really important hero is the addict or convict that chooses to change their ways, or anyone at all who realizes what they have done wrong in their lives and tried to fix everything. These people are addicted to something dangerous that eventually starts to define them as a person. Then one day they just decide that enough is enough and they try to get back on track. Recovery is a rough road and not a lot of people stay on it, but they lose control and go back to their old ways. I truly admire the people that keep staying sober and trying harder everyday to make something of themselves. It is extremely hard for them, but they do it anyway to they can have a better tomorrow. These are heroes. The convict that realizes that what he did was wrong and wants to tell everyone that he is sorry is a hero. He is a hero for recognizing right from wrong and trying to deal with it in a good and healthy way. They regret what they did and they try to correct it so they are heroes. Anyone who apologizes for any wrong-doing is choosing to do so, no matter how long it has been since it happened it is still bothering them and they are trying to make amends. All they want is peace and that is why they are heroes.
