Neighbors Good and Bad
Our house is somewhere in the middle of this housing estate so we are surrounded by other houses. Some of the neighbors are wonderful while some are horrible. Yet there are others who just keep to themselves and avoid their neighbors..

Noisiest Family
Further down the road is the noisiest family in the whole of Happy Garden. Their radio is on almost twenty four hours a day at a hardly tolerable volume. Fortunately we are a good five houses from them, so the noise is not too bad. The people nearer to them either enjoy the loud music or they have become deaf to the noise. Whatever it is no one seems to complain about it. Perhaps it is because of the man of the house is a huge burly fellow who drives a tanker for a living.

The Salesman
Opposite us on the other side of the road is another wonderful family. The salesman father is usually away on business. So the wife looks after their two children and the kids come over to my house often to play with our toys. They are not much younger than me so we get along very well. The wife often brings food for us to eat. Se is a great cook. The biscuits and cakes she makes are especially delicious we always welcome her to our house. The salesman’s mother also live with them and she is a gentle old woman now in her late sixties. She normally sits on a rattan chair just outside her front door and watches us play.

Noise of the Diesel Engine
The other neighbors are generally good people. I would say that our neighborhood is free of bad hats and troublesome people. I have never seen any argument between neighbors. Anytime any difficulty arises we seem to be able to settle it before the situation gets out of hand. For example, they were this man who started bringing home his huge lorry. For a time we had to bear the huge lorry. For a time we had to bear the noise of the diesel engine early in the morning and late in the night. Then someone must have made a complaint to this man and soon he never brought the lorry back again. So we have peace except for the fellow with his loud radio. However that is tolerable.

Live-and-Let-Live Attitude
On the whole I suppose most of the people living here adopt a live – and – let – live attitude. We do not make trouble for each other. Some are very friendly but some are not so. However, we do not have any hostile neighbor. That is something to be thankful for.

It’s true. No matter where you live, you’re going to have both good and bad neighbors.

It’s true.
The neighbours to my right and across the hall are from China, and even though they’re friendly enough, they make a ton of noise and slam their doors constantly.
Down the hall are some elderly people, who are really nice and chatty.
I’d be the hermit.

Hmm, I could recommend a game titled “Neighbor from Hell” if you need something to play. But I wont recommend you to buy a house near the playable character’s house. There is a reason why the name of the game is “Neighbor from Hell”.

We all live with many kinds of neighbours. Where I lived before I tended to keep to myself. I never met our next door neighbours in the ten years they were there, mainly because I was so busy with work. I would always help them if they needed help though. Now I am retired I tend to mix with my new neighbours more readily. I think circumstances affect neighbourliness. An interesting write.

Some people are rude, some may be hiding something, some are just loners and do not want company. We may never know the reason. Good article.

It’s a good article–but I was wondering about the bad neighbors?

I guess everyone as this problem. We have a few great neighbors and one very rude one that live right next door to me. They built a deck over their swimming pool that looks over the fence and right into my yard. I hate it and they seem to get mad when I or my husband go out in our backyard and we can see them on their deck. I wonder why they had to built it so high?

The quiet couple may just end up being your best friends. Some people are shy for a reason: yet these folks live in a busy area so they must at some level seek something from those around them… friendship, acceptance, whatever! I tend to be the hermit, but my friends know they can count on me.

Haha the ex teacher sounds like my parents. My parents are teachers and their kids are hardly ever home, and they don’t have a lot of friends, they said they don’t need them. But I think adults need friends just as much as childern-or almost as much. Your neighbors probably would be glad to see someone go out of their way to be friendly, they could be really cool people…like my parents-sort of ha.

Good neighbor can be very helpful compared with our siblings who live in far place. It is very fortunate to have good neighbor.

We should get to know our neighbors, so we can lend a helping hand in the time of need as Christine said. But they can also become good friends, something we want to keep.

I hardly ever see my neighbours in winter being out at work all day so I’m just starting to see them again now! Good article, well written.

We live in a multiple tenant building, -have had a series of ‘bad neighbors’ right next to us on one side (and very nice neighbors on the other side thank you very much!)
-Piano playing very loudly into the wee hours of the night (and not very adept at it,) another neighbor in the same apartment later on, brings in football or soccer fans for ‘the big game’ and I swear -the TV must be in ONE room and someone YELLS the play-by-play action into the OTHER room, -to the cheers and boos of the guests. And, -there is swearing and cussing. All quite audible.
And there are the ‘wild sex nights’ over there… ’nuff said!
A neighbor on the balcony below us used to have charcoal-grilling events that that started around 3-PM on a weekend day and there was a continual smell of smoky charcoal and blistering steaks and wieners that endured waaaaaay past midnight! I mean, I love a good char-broiled steak too but sheez! -Cook the damn thing and SHUT THE GRILL OFF! Stop throwing more char-briquettes onto the flames and every hour or so & having another hot dog or sausage! Cook them all and be done with it! The visible thick gray smoke wafting up over OUR balcony was so bad that we couldn’t use or enjoy OUR balcony (this in the summertime, from late July to the end of August this went on) and we had to keep the windows shut to keep the smoke out! It has been SO BAD sometimes that the smoke came up and entered our open-screened window and caused the SMOKE ALARM to start blarring!! Once I was napping in the bedroom with our child and I awoke to a bedroom that was filled with languid blue smoke curls! Just as I suddenly bolted upright from the bed (and began coughing violently) our smoke alarm in the hall started to ring!!
The neighbors on the floor below us had ‘accidentally’ set-fire to a forgotten steak on the grill, and were running drinking glasses of water from their kitchen sink to their balcony to snuff-out the flames, which were leaping up about one meter high!!!
And yet, these self-righteous self-appointed keepers of rental decorum whom have clearly not been in abidance with the RENTER’S AGREEMENT that they had to sign before moving in have the unmitigated gall to come up here to my door and yell at my wife because our (at the time) 3-year old son was ‘…making too much noise in the floor’ a rainy Saturday afternoon, and they ‘…could not take a nap!’ -And not just once… they ‘informed me’ once and I acknowledged the complaint and promised to try to prevent it’s continuance.. the following week, they came and yelled at my wife (BAD move folks, ’cause now I’m angry & invested…) and later that same day they returned for MORE arse and *I* answered the door… -I got to say some things-… Feelings were hurt I assure you! :-/
And there was no more complaints to us from them, and no more barbecues on their balcony from that day on! Grr!
I’m gonna hang a sign on my door that says:
WARNING: THE RESIDENT CRAZY HAS DETERMINED THESE PREMISES TO BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH IF YOU ARE HERE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT US OR ARE TRYING TO SOLICIT DOOR-TO-DOOR
(sorry to have hijacked your comments… your article hit a spot near & dear to my heart.)
Great article.
-Seriously.

True it takes all kinds. Even the ones that drive me crazy make life interesting. With that said I could do without my next door neighbor. He is a paranoid, delusional, self professed nudest. No joke and I am not exaggerating. You just have to laugh and tell the kids “Avoid the strange man….He’s not nice”.

Hey wait a minute — I’m the guy who lives 5 houses down from you.
Just kidding. But you’re right — in all neighborhoods, there’s a mix. Wherever there are people, you’ll find people behaving like, uh, people. My wife and I figured out recently that our neighbors probably think *we* are the strange ones.

nice article, Your neighbors are a part of your life — whether you like them or completely despite them.
i have no worry about the loud speakers (i love music), the not-so-friendly neighbor, or whatsoever because we have a huge yard so we didnt know what’s goin on outside, im a homebody, but i have a friend here who always come over me and we usually exchanged foods or anything. our neighbors and bystanders always staring at me every time i go out, i just smile and say hi to them…
