It is a project that I did recently, which is about the sustainable development in Hong Kong.
Nowadays, Hong Kong is fulfilled with buildings, vehicles, people, etc. Nevertheless, have you ever thought of using the vacant lands in rural areas? Recently, I have did a project on the sustainable developments in Hong Kong which talks about “Do Ngong Ping 360 benefit to Hong Kong?“.
This project is aimed at whether Ngong Ping 360 conform sustainable development. Ngong Ping 360 is a tourism project in Lantau Island, consisting of Ngong Ping Cable Car and Ngong Ping Village. Most visitors will agree Ngong Ping 360 provides excellent value for money and is a memorable experience not to be missed. However, as we think, do Ngong Ping 360 benefit to Hong Kong and conform sustainable development? Through out this project, we try to find out in the following aspects:
1. Keep the environmental impacts to a minimum, protecting and preserving the natural environment near it.
2. Enable to develop tourism and the credibility of making investment in this tourism project
3. Increase in employment rate and living standard
1. In Environment
Construction principals and methods were developed to keep environmental impacts to a minimum, protecting and preserving the North Lantau Country Park.
a. Ecological surveys were conducted to identify any rare and protected species.
b. Any such affected species were then relocated under the supervision of a qualified Ecologist.
c. The cable way route and type were selected to minimize the number of tower structures required.
d. Their associated impacts, whilst maximizing passenger numbers.
e. Over 12,000 tonnes of material were transported into North Lantau Country Park.
f. Rather than build temporary roads or transport towers, which would have had a massive impact on this precious environment, helicopters and mules were used to transport the materials.
2. In Economy
The cost of Ngong Ping 360 although is expensive, the government can even earn more money after recover the costs from following way:
a. Developing tourism
b. The rent of shop in Ngong Ping Village
c. The sale of cable car tickets
3. In Society
It benefit Hong Kong in the following way:
a. Provide jobs for the jobless
b. Provide transport for the nearby residents etc.
As we can see, Ngong Ping 360 conform the principle of sustainable development which are environment, economy and society.
Method to Collect Data
I first thought about what title and issue is suitable for the project and we last decided to choose「Do Ngong Ping 360 tally with sustainable development」as my project title. After I had chosen the project title, I started to find some information that relevant to Ngong Ping 360 or it’s construction through different medium (Internet, newspaper, magazine etc). And I had found some general information of Ngong Ping 360. To increase the project’s factually, I also designed a questionnaire to interview Hong Kong people and collect their opinion and comments through different kinds of interview.
