People’s Obsession with Celebrities is Unhealthy
We are being taught to worship others when in fact we should worship ourselves.
1. Actors and actresses
Movie stars get paid big bucks. Movie stars are mostly chosen from a select bunch coming from California or family members of other movie stars. We are selling each other short to think that somehow these few members of society stand out when really they are quite average. This is a false reality that is being promoted through TV. This is the type of thing the bible would likely consider idolatry. That is an irony missed by most people unless I am mistaken.
2. Athletes
Why do we watch competitive sports? For whatever reason it may have started, with the advent of televised sports it has become a diversion for the masses to live vicariously through others. We sit and watch the athletes play and find ourselves doing very little. Athletes, like movie stars, are selected in a process that favors the children of other athletes. People learn to cheer on the team with its few members who have been chosen to represent the entire school, city, or state. This conditioned behavior is self deprecating for we are all beautiful and healthy creatures and should not allow someone else to represent us.
3. Musicians
Now consider musicians. We have the exact same occurrence here. We uphold a select few musicians as the supreme greats. The production quality and recording quality of professional musicians is outstanding. To have access to that type of equipment is quite challenging. To get noticed by the producers in California, New York, and other cities is extremely difficult yet we are led to believe that somehow these people are better than the rest of the musicians in the country. In reality many people could do a fine job recording music if given the opportunity.
People are making money off of this system and it works for them so why change it. It does not work for the rest of us however. It promotes false realities and aspirations. We would do a lot better to focus more on improving ourselves instead of watching others improve their selves.
Instead of going to Friday night football games why not get together with a group of friends and play games. There are many challenging and rewarding games. Or organize a game of football or basketball with your own friends. Have a pot luck party and share books and music. Get together with some friends and play music and write songs. Write submissions for Triond.
There are so many activities we can do that focus on ourselves and the people we are close to that we should not be contributing to this culture of false reality and deprecation. People are beautiful creatures and the myth that is being sold to us is that somehow there is a select few that stands out from everybody else when in reality this is commercialism. McDonald’s would be nothing without the millions of dollars in advertising and promotion. Sports may have started innocently enough but marketing and advertising is turning them into humiliating deceptions and implications about the quality of the masses of people in the world.
That is why I think that people’s obsession with celebrity is unhealthy. And remember, the first step to solving a problem is being aware of it.

It’s completely unhealthy- NOTHING positive comes from it.
