On Friday the Forestry Development Credit Fund reported that seven employees of the Yanacocha mining company were being held hostage in the town of Chugur, in Celendin, Cajamarca.
According to Peru21, the organization issued a press release saying the workers had been kidnapped on Thursday, and were intercepted as they returned from presenting an educational program in Celendín.
The press release said the former Lieutenant Governor of Chigur, who accompanied the workers to the presentation, was also kidnapped, but released shortly after.
According to local media, the Yanacocha workers are thought to be in a nearby communal house, watched over by about 60 to 70 people.
Police and the local prosecutor’s office were informed about the incident, and have started an investigation to find the employees.
