Politically Correct: Also Known as Core-Wrecked

*PC can S my V! Yeah, I said it.

Political correctness and censorship is only harming us. It is wiping out entire sections of history because people find it offensive. Well you know what? That is because it is offensive, and whether it is written, spoken or heard, it is real life. So, really, when you think of it, it is actually politically incorrect to deem anything as politically incorrect and considering that the policy of being politically correct requires ending the use of anything that is appointed politically incorrect then by common logic, if you can not have one without the other but you also can not have one with the other then that leaves us with…. reality? I think that makes sense. Wheww, almost lost my breath there trying to figure that one out!

The idea of political (in)correctness is completely flawed. Who decides what is politically correct and what is politically incorrect? Politicians?  Oh, okay, that’s promising seeing as how politicians are known as morally bankrupt, conniving, lying and ignorant creatures that live every second of the day with the life motto “every man for himself” constantly circling around his head like a tetherball on a pole. It only makes sense that we trust their judgment about what is wrong and what is right. Not to mention, PC is based off of a relatively small group of people, who certainly do not represent the people’s opinions as a whole, who complained because something hurt their poor sensitive little feelings. Cue the sad song on the mini violin and the alligator tears. Oh, please.

Living in a society, or world, trying to be political correct is counterproductive. It has gotten to a point where it is not merely censoring material that people find offensive, it is turning logical into illogical; fact into fiction; skewing details of history and molding a ‘new’ history that caters to the ignorant and easily offended. Writer Jody Mwaw insists,

“Material close to being offensive is removed or adjusted to satisfy the super-sensitive or to avoid any unforeseen complaints. For example, American Indians can’t be depicted with long braids, in rural settings, or on reservations, even though many American Indians do have long braids and live in rural settings or on reservations. If the depictions of our historical figures are incorrect, then the new PC textbooks should ensure their historical accuracy and footnote each change appropriately.”

She makes a great point because PC has become more of a way of ignoring history rather than protecting it.

In conclusion, it seems that PC, while intended to do good, has, for the most part, done the exact opposite. It sheds light on the negative meaning of something by pointing it out and then banishing it, but banishing such things takes away the knowledge that explains why it is negative. PC enables ignorance to grow, and with ignorance comes unjustified negativity. Like stated in the beginning paragraph, it has gotten to the point where we cannot even try/intend to be nice without offending someone. PC and censorship has gone way too far and it is taking us all down a slippery slope, bringing us directly back to the place that we are trying to escape from.

My little girl went to a real PC kindergarten. We were not allowed to say “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” , They called it a Holiday tress but spent an entire week celebrating Kwanza…

On the one hand, I like “happy holidays” because its more inclusive, and I and most of my friends aren’t christians.

On the other, I do agree that people are overly sensitive and that ignoring history is a damned good way of making sure it repeats itself. It’s better to teach WHY something is offensive than to completely ignore it! And no matter how hard we run, we simply cannot outrun a sexist, racist past. Thats how it was. It’d be like saying romans didn’t have slaves from all over the empire.

But where can we draw the line? When PC started up, it WAS needed. Even in the 70’s and 80’s there were ads saying “a woman’s place is in the kitchen” and “men are better than women” (no kidding, you can look it up) We are fighting a battle against societal norms that have existed for thousands of years – people ARE racist and sexist (all people, by nature, have xenophobia). So PC is needed – but should be contained and not blasted like a cannon at every minor generally inconsequential thing, and it should never keep us from recognizing where we came from.
