Prejudice

Prejudice in our country today.

Prejudice is a negative emotional attitude held towards members of a specific social group. Prejudice may occur in schools, business, police department and government.

In most cases people who are prejudiced are called racist, and sexist, ageist, and heterosexist.

For example: A racist person not only hates blacks but also races other than theirs.

Sexism is when, like for instance people that do construction work may want to hire men for the job, and not a female, because they think that only men can do construction jobs.

Ageism : lets say that a company wants to hire a manager for a certain area in the company. They will tend to hire some one who is much older because they will say that a older person has more experience than a younger one.

Many researchers agree that prejudice can be characteristic in general personality. The researchers studied anti-Semitism. They found that people who are prejudice against one group tend to also be prejudice against all outer-group.

(coon, 2006)

Prejudice and discrimination are mainly negative manifestations of integrative power. Prejudice and discrimination towards people that were together only push them apart. Basically prejudice and discrimination imply some sort of relationship. If there was no relationship they would completely unaware of another person’s or group’s existence.
