Prostitution- Selling Sex for Money

Did you ever see the movie “Pretty Woman” starring Julia Roberts? In this movie she plays “Vivian”, a prostitute that Richard Gere’s character picks up on the streets and takes back to his hotel. Now of course this movie makes it seem glamorous, but in real life prostitution is anything but! So, why do women do it?
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and I had seen quite a few prostitutes (hookers) that would roam the streets in my neighborhood. They would wait for cars to pass by and slow down so the driver could talk to them. I could hear the man asking “How much”? And depending on the woman’s answer he would either drive off or she would get into the car with him! These women had a corner a few blocks away from where I lived that they hung out on waiting for men to come and ask for their “services”. Most of the time you wouldn’t see them but if you had to go to the store you had to pass by their corner. They never spoke to anyone but you could see them in their “barely there” outfits just hanging around and waiting.
I grew up knowing what these women did for a living and was disgusted by them. The thought that anyone could sell their body for money was just appalling. Yet, I had to wonder why they didn’t just get a “real job”. Unfortunately the truth is that most of these women don’t have any other skills. They haven’t even finished high-school much less gone to college so how could they possibly get a job doing anything else. And the truth of the matter is that sex sells! Most of these women make more in an hour than some people do in a week!
Prostitution is illegal so these women are often arrested and thrown in jail but when they get out they are back on the streets and selling themselves all over again. Why? They don’t know any other way. This is not what they wanted to do when they grew up but it may be all they can do, or at least that’s how they feel. Yet, it isn’t too long before this life catches up with them and HIV or some other Venereal Disease gets a hold of them.
I found myself feeling sorry for these women and hoping that someday they can turn their lives around. I don’t live in that area anymore but I am sure that women are still out there selling themselves for money because sex still sells. What do you think? Prostitution is the oldest job in the world and it has passed through many stages. There are prostitutes who barely have an education, but believe it or not there´re also univeristy students practising it, and as in many other jobs there are high and low class prostitutes. The ones who welcome their clients in their flats or penthouses are of course high class ones. The ones in the streets, especially in the city centre of any city, are usually low class or yonkies who need money for their dose. Interesting article. Thanks for sharing.

Prostitution can’t be abolished. I think they should be given medical check ups and treatments periodically. Otherwise they will spread HIV all over the world.

not all prostitutes are out standing on the corners or in the flats either, there are alot of women out there who “date” and then expect the men to buy them stuff, either drugs, alcohol or pay their bills, money doesnt always have to change hands, it could be other things, you would be surprised who does this and how much it is done good post

A very good topic for debate. I totally agree with your views. The other day I was listening to the radio and a group of women were in favor of legalizing prostitution. I was so disgusted. Can you imagine if they did here in Florida? I don’t think this is an honorable job and even though many lack skill, they can find a job in a warehouse or even at a grocery store. It’s a scary world out there. Good work.

To be honest they don’t bother me and it is (arguably) the oldest profession, so it’s not going away anytime soon.

I used to look down on prostitutes when I was younger. However, I’ve gotten older, and I somewhat understand why some of these women do this. Most of them really don’t want to do it, and probably do it so their kids can eat, etc. I’m not saying it’s right because it’s not, and it’s a dangerous life to live, but I think that some people should think about why a person does the things they do before judging them. Nice article.

Instead of arresting the prostitutes, the authorities need to go after the pimps and scumbags who are in most cases forcing these woman to be in this lifestyle. What most people don’t realize is that most of the time these women are forced into this appalling lifestyle. Yes, what they are doing is wrong, but it’s the pimps and the johns who are the real criminals and sinners.
