Reasonable Reasons to Not Turn Up to a Blind Date

Reasonable reasons to get out of a blind date.

Don’t you just hate it when people try and “set you up”? They pity your singular existence and love for solitude, and endeavour to find you “a nice girl/ guy”, when in truth, you’re quite happy the way you are and the meandering flow of your life.

It’s often harder to say no to kind intentions, simply because you don’t want to offend or be impolite. You end up accepting arrangements for blind-dates and “set ups” simply because you don’t want to be rude. You’re provided with relevant details of the datee, hair and eye color, height, defining physical attributes and positively emphasised aspects of their personality, but no description can ever do a person justice until you meet them yourself.

So how do you get out of a blind date once it has been arranged?

Assuming you haven’t been provided with the relevant contact details of your date, getting out of it is seemingly impossible, unless you consider the more extreme methods at your disposal such as ringing the venue where your date will be held and passing on a message, or calling the friend who arranged the date and giving an excuse. The most obvious would be to simply stand your date up, but are you really that cruel and heartless? It’s far simpler to be organised in your plan of attack, at the very least finding out where your date works so you could contact him/ her at their place of work!

The List of Reasonable Reasons For Not Turning Up To A Date:

1. An Emergency With Your Pet: Dog, Cat, Rabbit or Snake: most dates will be sympathetic if you have to rush   your pet to a vet. Sure it pays to be a little creative with the symptoms or ailment, but don’t go overboard because your date will no doubt relay your reasons for cancellation to that caring friend who originally arranged the date.

2. You’ve Arrived and Discovered They Are Butt Ugly: The only way from here is out, providing you haven’t been seen. A blind date will no doubt be on the look out for someone matching your description, therefore a stealthy approach to the meeting place is vital if you want to avoid spending the evening with Shrek’s twin. Utilize all buildings and bins lining your approach as hiding points until you spot your waiting date and assess them.

3. You Have To Work Late: There is nothing more reasonable than the requirement to work late, and even more so if you can blame your boss for keeping you at work. It takes the blame away from you and creates seemingly unavoidable circumstances for your absence.

4. You Discover The Date Is Friends With Your Parents or Your Ex: A totally reasonable excuse to call off a date. Who wants the only thing they have in common with someone to be an association with an ex or your own parents. The relationship would be doomed from the outset!

5. You Don’t Like Your Date’s Choice of Venue: The choice of venue says a lot about a potential date. If they have arranged to meet you outside a fast food restaurant, they’re probably cheap, outside the best restaurant in town, they’re high maintenance. A good potential date will find a happy, comfortable medium between the two.

6. You Are Unwell: Perfectly reasonable. Headaches and sickness can occur anytime. They are also useful fake excuses as symptoms aren’t always visible when you are ill, so the friend that set you up will never know you made it up.

7. You Left Your Wallet/ Purse At Home: No-one likes turning up to a date without money. You’ll be perceived as cheap and assuming.

8. You Lost Your Car Keys, Bus/ Train Pass: No method of travel means no show.

Obviously you could get a little more little creative with the truth, but the more outlandish your story, the more likely your date, and your friend will cotton on to the simple fact you just didn’t want to go through with it.
