Regionalism and Its Impact on Indian Tribals
The impact of Regionalism on tribal in India can be found in the segregated living of the these communities.
The impact of Regionalism on tribal in India can be found in the segregated living of the these communities. It is common to see Naga tribal in northern India and an Irula in southern India completely alien to his surroundings. The practices of tribals in cultural, ethnic, social and economic spheres greatly vary and there is no pan Indian tribal culture. The diversity of the Indian tribals is the greatest aspect of regionalism in the country.
Regionalism also has drawn invisible but tangible lines which keep the tribals within their boundaries. Thus there is very limited cross-cultural interaction between regional tribals. An Irula does not favourably react to the proposition of marrying a Gookha tribal. Thus regionalism has kept out the possible interaction between tribals.
The social mores which determines social relationships have been segregated and highly regionalised.A Malabar tribal will have a highly matriarchal type of family and kinship relations and so will a Naga tribal. But though both are matriarchal in nature, due to the distance that separates Malabar and Nagaland there is no social interrelationship between the two.Similarly there are patriarchal tribes with in Tamil Nadu which do not favour matriarchal tribes in Malabar.
Regionalism has given separate identities to the tribal population and in spite of industrialization which has brought many tribal communities to live in one urban area, there is very little interaction.
