Room for Rent

Common scenarios in many rooms for rent in thickly populated areas in the Philippines, a glaring reality of poverty and its many forms.

Can you imagine dining, cooking, resting and doing other household chores in just one small room? Maybe in a short span of time, the answer is yes. But wait! What about staying there for months, years or possibly throughout your lifetime? Sounds ridiculous? Let us find out.

The room is perhaps just as big as the laundry room of some big houses or even smaller, made of inexpensive and poor lumber materials of irregular sizes and shapes and its construction does not even pass any engineering specifications where strength and durability is relatively just apt for a cheaper rental fee. Worst, proper ventilation is definitely not a primary concern, thus, during cooking time, various fumes remain within its four corners.

Likewise, if you are an occupant of the room, you’ve got neighbors next door. So what do you expect then? Most probably, even the whispering moments and foul odors emitted by them with that exasperating sound could be heard and smelled. If they are in trouble where outburst of emotions is taking place, you are definitely in a desperate situation. In short, privacy in conversations is no longer an issue. After all, neighbors face similar challenges each passing day, nothing new… nothing unusual.

On the other hand, having similar experiences and situations in life, neighbors find themselves consoling and helping one another and build a closer and stronger friendship. Several incidents would prove how they manifested their utmost concern, care and heartfelt sympathy for each other especially in times of griefs and harsh realities in life, shared the laughters and funs with in times of family celebrations and victories gained, and expressed views and opinions over an issue or a problem being faced.

For you guys out there, life of that sort is probably so horrible to bear with but for my unfortunate kababayans (fellow Filipinos), it is their life. Whether they like it or not, they can always find ways and means to fit in to the situation, one virtue of the Filipinos that I am so proud of. Life’s circumstances after all make life even more beautiful especially if it is dependent on God’s mercy everyday, a motivation that keeps them hoping and dreaming. In fact, numerous from rugs to riches stories are being told and heard which mostly started from a simple dream in that old room for rent.

Yes,it’s true,to achieve success in life is not to dwell on how our surrounding would be like, with what we have….but on how we view and live our life,a life which is fully controlled by God.

poverty is never a reason for anyone to be successful in life if we allow God take the lead in our lives.

We used to have a boarding house when I was in high school. The rooms were pretty big during that time. The rent was just 200 pesos a month including water and electricity. I enjoyed reading your works.
